This thread has grown and how interesting to see that A NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED THESE GLASSES SHATTERING.Thats just the people on this forum, and those that have ventured to this thread. There are probably lots more out there. I am sorry but something so serious as a glass shattering SHOULD mean immediate action.
Then we should probably think about taking action for all forms of glass drinking vessels and only drink from plastic beakers in the future!

The only reason you hear about it more often in some cases is because of the high profile of the companies involved. No-one except the owner knows for sure the history behind the use of each of these individual glasses before they broke. If people are reporting them to appropriate authorities and it is a wide spread problem then something will be done as was the case when Ikea recalled a range of their hand made drinking glasses.

Blithering about other people who don't agree with your opinion on an internet forum is no more helpful than the very people you are blithering about!

for example, the trauma this event caused and the phobia DD picked up after having a glass smash/shatter/crack makes me question the authenticity of the event.

I find that completely believable. If something really frightens you it can induce an intense determination to avoid that thing. This is particularly true for children. Given that the person in question suffered an injury makes it all the more likely.

How long the 'phobia' will last is another matter.
There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.
  • Actually, my DD had a few of these glasses, and I've found one shattered in an empty sink several times now.

I thought it was just coincidence it was the Coke glasses, and there had been hot water in the bottom of the sink or they were put in clumsily or something each time.

I wonder if there is a manufacturing fault?

  • Thank you for the warning OP i will thoroughly check the few glasses i have here.

Of course from the other 'Free' point of view. Some people may not eat large meals normally but do pay out the extra 30p <<or whatever it is to upgrade to a large meal just to get a glass.

    Blithering? Really! LOL:rotfl:
I am merely giving my opinion. A glass shattering whilst a child drinks from it could have very serious consequences. I have seen products withdrawn for far less serious reasons, such as a bit of stitching may come undone!

I too have some glasses from purchasing meals at mcd's, however I do not like to use hem as they do look thin and given the cost IMO they are likely to be poorly made. However the wife & grown up kids use them all the time - I stick to the thick ikea ones.

So would I give a child a drink in them? Not really.
I wonder if the ops child put the glass to his/her lips or mouths the edge and uses teeth? (I have seen that done) as that is likely to cause cheap glass to break.

All glasses can break, that's what glass does - it is very fragile.

The answer is simple, stop getting these free glasses, use plastic beakers instead when giving your child a drink.

I hope the child gets over this without too much trauma.

Ignoring the petty squabbling over the last few pages, my kids seem to be quite adept at breaking glasses. Fortunately none of them have caused anything other than very minor injuries.

How do they break them? Well most of the time it's because my kids don't listen when I tell them not to bite the glasses. My 4 year old is a devil for it. Any fairly thin glass just breaks off when they lock their teeth down on the glass.

Glasses don't just break when you drink from them unless there's a pre-existing crack in it to weaken the glass or the child breaks it themselves.

PLEASE don't give your kids plastic cups to drink from. They contain dangerous chemicals, and DEFINITELY should never be used for hot drinks. if you're worried about glass, use ceramic.

This child posted about is far older than 4 btw lol as I have Pmed the OP
