    sorry for hijacking your thread.

i too am suffering from pmt at the moment - it used to be bang on the week before my period was due and now its on the first couple of days that i bleed. its getting worse - over the past 3-4 months of those 2 days, my heart races, i cry all the time and am severely depressed. i dont sleep, worry about anything, i want to leave my oh and the kids during those days and have thought of suicide. my oh says that i am zombie like but is very supportive.
i range the surgery today to speak to my gp (its taken me ages to come to this) but the receptionist wouldnt let me until i told her what was wrong - so i put the phone down!! i tried again later but was given the same response.(its hard enough explaining to the doctor without the receptionist getting involved!)

during the rest of the month i am fine - i dont have these feelings and i am well motivated and relaxed.

today - my eyes are red raw from crying, tomorrow i know i will feel better.

Hello-im fed up of nurses....my doctor has been fine with me when going to him with problems but the nurses have drove me mad! The one upset me so badly (at the wrong time of month!) and i burst into tears, she then embarassed me in the waiting room...she loudly asked m hubby 'is she always like this?!' as if i was some nutter/got mental probs!

Need to post more-but having tea first....more details later!

    keely.

  • hi fsdss,

is there any trigger that might have made things worse in the past few months? have you gained or lost weight or had any other changes?

when i'm back to my usual sunny self i can't believe what a cow i am during my PMS - my husband is a saint!

does the receptionist always want to know the reason for the appointment, or are there times when you can book without giving the reason? ours ask if you want an urgent appointment, but you can book for a few days in advance and they don't ask why. if you can book in advance it may be worth calling the receptionist when you're okay, but making the appointment for a day you know you'll be in tears etc. so that the doc sees how bad you feel.

hello, thought i'd add my bit

i've just been reading through all this thread, even though we're all miserable with it, at least we know these thoughts and feelings are 'normal' (in the context of having pmt, if you see what i mean!)

does anyone think it gets worse after you have children, i certainly have. i am at this moment waiting for the period to start, because i know what a relief it will bring.

water retention, headaches, spots, cravings for carppy food.

but the worst and most destructive is the moods: feeling suicidal, 'what's the point', wanting to run away, don't want anyone to touch me or look at me, etcetc. i hate the thought of the kids growing up thinking that's who i really am, which it isn't. for one or two weeks after a period, i have been known to be quite lovely:D

now what's happening is, the gap between periods is suddenly getting much longer, yet the pmt is still starting at the same time as before, so i'm getting pmt for about 3 weeks at a time, it's getting me down. good luck to anyone who has success with antidepressants but i had them before (other reasons) and that's what made me double my bodyweight virtually overnight (well not literally but you know what i mean!) for what it's worth:

what i find takes the edge off it (or at the very least, it provides a distraction)

    hard exercise

eat something starchy every hour, even if it's just a ryvita (credit to dr chris on this morning!)

i take 'berocca' i can really tell the difference with that, it's all the b vits, magnesium, zinc etc. i take the solid one, (not the effervescent cos that has aspartame in it, something else i'm avoiding for migraine reasons!)
i take 'eye-q' which is fish oil and eve prim oil combined, that definitely lifts the mood (pinch it from dd's, it was meant to be for them, now we're all on it!)

i also take eve prim or starflower oil, which is more concentrated.

can i just say, this might be a "TMI alert" but if it's really bad and you're feeling desperate, stick a pin in the capsule and massage directly into boobs or lower tummy area (and swallow some as well)
(it does work, think along the lines of how a nicotine patch works!)

also try 'quiet life' tablets, they are like kalms but they have added b vitaimsn. they sell this in all chemist and home bargains.

i hardly drink at all these days, but a brandy tea can feel nice in the early evening:D

these are my things that i do anyway, although they're not all working all of the time!
  • have you heard of PCOS? polycystic ovaries - mine came on all of a sudden just before my wedding, i went from a size 12 to a 20 in just 6 months even though i went to the gym every day, had body wraps etc.

i had fab boobs spilling out of my medieval wedding dress but i would have preferred the rest of me to be less wobbly :rotfl:

lol carmenpiranha, that' s the only good thing about being big, it makes you have great boobs:D
how does pcos come on, i always thought it was linked to having trouble conceiving (which i haven't:D )

anyway, i came back to this thread to give this recipe which i find is good for taking the edge of pmt. I'm copying it here exactly as it was in a newspaper article ages ago, it was actually about the menopause, all the ingredients are supposed to help 'balance your hormones' etc so i have tried it for pmt.

i have put it in here, rather than in a recipe thread, because it's supposed to be a bit medicinal/nutritional iyswim.

i think it has helped: if nothing else, at least it's definitley nutritious so worth a try, something healthy to snack on at least.

Remember to make it the week before PMT time, or else you'll be too tired and angry to be bothered with cooking:D

    A SLICE OF NEW LIFE

Makes 2, using loaf tins, ideally have a slice a day with butter

    100g / 3 1/1oz soya flour
    100g/3 1/2oz wholewheat flour
    100g/3 1/2oz porridge oats
    100g/3 1/2oz linseeds
    50g/2oz sunflower seeds
    50g/2oz sesame seeds
    50g/2oz flaked almonds
2 pieces stem ginger, finely chopped
    200g/7oz raisins
    1/2 tsp nutmeg
    1/2 tsp cinnamon
    1/2 tsp ground ginger
    about 750ml / 1pt 7fl oz soya milk
    1 tbsp malt extract

Put the dry ingredients in a large bowl and mix thoroughly. Then add the soya milk and malt extract. Mix well and leave to soak for about 30 mins. If the mixture is too stiff, add some more soya milk. Spoon the mixture into 2 lightly oiled loaf tins lined with greaseproof paper. Bake in the oven at 190c / 375f / gas mark 5, for about 1 1/4 hours or until cooked through, test with a skewer. Turn out and leave to cool.

I would add: doing it a a loaf shape added a lot of cooking time, i would say it's better to try it spread flat on a baking sheet like a flapjack and adjust the cooking time to suit.

It's initially a bit expensive to set up the ingredients for all this, as they are all sold in big bags, but it's cheap in the long run iyswim. (i got everything from julian graves when they were having a 50% off everything day!)

hi all thanks for your support - just an update.

my sis came round and saw the state i was in so took me to mums. luckily mum's friend was there who is a gp (different practice to mine) and rang my doctors. she initially was told the same by receptionist (wanting more details) so told her who she was and wanted to speak to my gp asap. i am seeing him on fri with my mums friend for a blood test (hormone levels) and a referral to gynae.

since i last posted i have packed my bags, left my husband (came back though), thrown out the majority of my clothes and cut some of them up, argued with the school, argued with a friend, withdrawn my child from nursery, sworn at the doctors receptionist. stuck 2 fingers up at the world and told it to go forth (if you get my drift). i have a black eye from burst blood vessels through crying.

i have pcos, history of gynea related hormone probs (inc cancer) and currently taking metformin for pcos. she feels that this combination is the cause of the problems and will help me get it sorted.

  • i hope you get results soon! maybe extra metformin could help, or prozac. i know some people with pcos who take prozac for the pms, they're not depressed, it can be used for pms too.

please let us all know how you get on *HUGS*
