  • He had his first vaccination at 6 weeks, given by a vet obviously.., it is perfectly legal and ok to do this. He is actually 9 weeks old today. We have only been walking him a few days but as we spoke to other dog owners before getting the pup, we are part of a community already.

We did not take out insurance because we purchased another pup last week, he can't be vaccinated til this week (2nd one) so wanted to get the insurance after that and they'd both been chipped. Unless we'd have taken out insurance the day he was born - or within 4 weeks (not possible, we didn't have him then).., the insurance wouldn't pay out, u have to wait at least four weeks to make a claim on the insurance schemes I looked at.

I don't hate any breed of dog, but yes I agree the dog should have been on a lead and preferably with a muzzle. U only have to see pics of my pup with drain tubes coming out his throat to see why. I realise something could have triggered a dog that was seemingly ok in every other way.., but I suspect there would have been some indication that the dog wasn't safe in public.

How awful for the OP. Whether the pup has been fully vaccinated or not (maybe the owner's not sure about his age) is not relevant, the poor pup was lucky to escape with his life by the sound of things.

I've got to say, yes, I have known some lovely staffies. But every single time except one, when my dogs have been subjected to an unprovoked attack, it's been a staffie doing the attacking. The one exception was a Japanese Akita.

If I see a staffie approaching I get my dogs out of it's way as soon as I can. Even more so if it's off lead and accompanied by a moronic looking young lad. I'm none too keen on American Bulldogs either.

Op, as others say, check you haven't got that first month's free insurance, and if you haven't try to get some sorted right away.

I do hope your puppy will be ok.

I hope your puppy will be okay OP, poor little mite. I also hope when he is fully grown you will always put a muzzle on him when he's out for walkies, just in case.

One of my friends runs a dog creche (I know its ridiculous).

Its impossible to get insurance on Staffies so they unfortunately can't attend. Sadly Staffies are one of those dog breeds that have a very bad reputation.

you have no money and have to use the services of PDSA yet buy another dog?

    sorry but it beggars believe
Its not that we have more patience as we grow older, its just that we're too tired to care about all the pointless drama ;)
  • Just want to point out that it is not just staffies that are nasty. My 2yr old chocolate labrador who I've had from 8wks will go for other dogs if they come near her or me as she's over protective, we do muzzle her though.
  • Also I think your dog is too young to be going out as vets recommend 12wks.

I thought you could take a dog out in public after the second course of vaccinations had been completed?

Absolute rubbish, of course you can get insurance for them!

They have a bad reputation because of bad owners and to be blunt ignorant people.

An 8wk old pup will/should have only just had its first course completed.
