Brakes making a noise when braking

    In a manual car - yes. Not as easy in an auto which is why they tend to be heavier on brake use.

    That said, a bit of forward planning and not driving two inches off the car in front allows plenty of time for lifting off the throttle and slowing down to keep a gap rather than constently dabbying the anchors.
    What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

    Sorry but you will have to explain this one. How can I be in 'top gear with my foot off the gas' exactly?

    Car in 6th gear ( or 5th if you only have 5 ) going downhill not touching any of the pedals.
    Does that explain it for you.
    Gas = accelerator.

    Obviously you are not much of a driver if you think that is how it's done. Have another guess... i'll give you a clue, it's not 'the pedals' bit that you have got wrong.

    Well your own post suggests long service intervals are not a great idea, they have already changed it on your own car. I wonder why that is? And why other manufacturers are also doing away with long service intervals. (For example Mercedes in 2009, you can also see that VW in the US has shorter intervals than VW in Europe.)

    Because it wasn't good for the longevity of the engine.

    Brakes are for wimps..
    Herbert Austin, Said that good brakes encouraged bad driving.

    I agree with this and try not to use mine at all.

    My cars recommended service interval is 12,000 miles, Yet i get it done every 4000 - 6000 miles.

    Probably why my old car with 150,000 miles on it has an engine in better condition than newer cars with 60 or 70,000 miles on them.
    3 years on and its still taxed and insured.
    I would still have it not, But i needed an estate.

    Looks like you will have to point it out to me then as one of the roads near me the speed limit is 60mph with a one mile downhill slope. I take my foot off the accelerator and the car will continue all the way down the slope at 60mph. If I change down to 5th gear the car will slow down so it stays in 6th.

    Well i'm talking about much lower speeds so perhaps we have our wires crossed. If so, I apologise for my earlier remarks.

    I regularly follow cars being driven along 30mph downhill stretches where the drivers don't seem to be able to reduce or maintain speeds without constant braking.

    I can travel along such roads at the speed limit without touching my brakes at all by simply using the correct gear(s).
