Brakes making a noise when braking

I've noticed over the last few days that when I brake, my brakes make a sort of scraping sound. Same sort of sound you get from the brakes when a car has been stood unused for a while that usually wares off after braking a few times.
Does this mean that my brake pads and/or discs have probably worn out?

Probably, And everytime you brake its eating into the discs. So new discs and pads will ne needed.
When was it last serviced? Did they not mention the brakes?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
The discs already have a lip on them so the plan was to get them renewed too as well as the pads.
Car was last serviced about 15K miles ago and the service sheet at the time said pads were excellent and discs were worn. So I take it after 15K miles, pads would be worn out.0 -
I expect the previous posters are probably correct in their diagnosis.
However, I actually experienced a similar sound to the one you describe when a brake caliper was "Grabbing" slightly (i.e not fully releasing after braking). I transpired to be caused by some oxidisation on the lower slider pin preventing smooth operation and was fairly easy to rectify.
Ultimately, when brakes make any noises, it is prudent to examine them.0 -
Might be a wear indicator grating on the disc, could be a damaged disc, could be a stone trapped by the pad, could be the caliper come loose and jammed into the wheel, could be anything and theres no hope of any of us diagnosing it from our chairs at home.
Any unusual noise or sound from the brakes should see the wheels removed and the noise traced before driving again.
Had two very memorable customer cars with brake neglect in my lifetime, one the pads had worn to metal and had worn the non vented front dics down to about 1/32" thickness, how they didn't shatter under normal braking i shall never know, and how thick must the driver have been to carry on driving with the noise and grating through the pedal that must have been there...i wish i'd polished them up and kept them as a souvenier and to show people who neglect servicing how close serious injury and death can get.
The other had lost a pad, the one nearest the piston and the car had been braking on the aluminium piston which was almost worn through...and resembled a boys or idiots baseball cap the peak being formed from melted piston.
Lots more showing neglect but these two cheated death, their own fair enough but other innocent's unjustly, only by pure chance.0 -

I don't need a lecture on brake safety and neglect. I'm getting it seen to tomorrow.0 -
I'd just ignore it for another 15,000 miles - it will be fine.
(Oh, in light of recent court cases I should point out that the above comment was an example of "ironic humour" and that you should get new pads and discs immediately. Please don't put me in jail.)Can I help?0 -
lol, Not serviced for 15,000 miles why start now

Keep driving until it wont go anymore.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
