    Wifi and 3g is not everywhere, usually the openzone is in places where there are high volumes, eg shopping centres etc.

    Getting wifi depends on the conditions, how strong the router is, how many walls, how thick etc. You should get something in the 5 to 50 metre range. If at your work you can't get 3G then the answer may be to switch network, you may be too far from a Vodaphone mast but might be right under another networks. Can you not ask around other people at work to see who gets a good 3G signal and ask what network they are on?

    You can get an unlock code for the phone via Ebay within a few hours for less than £5 and use then any network.

    For example if people at work are getting a good O2 signal then you can go over to GiffGaff which uses the O2 network, £10 a month 'Goodybag' on PAYG gets you 250 mins of calls, unlimited texts and 1GB of data. Other networks offer comparable deals - you may just have to work out which network they are using, Virgin for instance use the T-Mobile network and so on.

    Wi-Fi usually extends throughout the building but not much beyond that

    Have your company got their own Wi-Fi?

    Mine have but it took our IT department 2 months to give me (find out) the password - I know I know - nothin new there about IT Depts :)

    If they dont have wireless, just buy a wireless router for £20 and tell them to plug it into the server - or plug it in the back of your PC and share the internet connection

    sorry to hop on to this post but i've had my huawei for a week now and still no further forward. we have a router supplied by virginmedia and are able to use wifi on all our devices (laptop. MAC etc) but I cannot get my phone to connect. I took it to work and it scanned and found the work wifi but when I do the same operation at home it says ... scanning ... connecting to virginmedia ...(numbers) requesting IP address ... and then disconnected. Please can someone advise - I have been looking online for a manual as the start-up guide provided is probably very good if you already know a bit about mobiles but no use at all to me. Also I have bought a £10 month allowance from Vodafone (to who the phone is locked) until I get myself sorted out with a sim only contract (probably the three one) but have not downloaded any of the vodafone ones which keep popping up - is this sensible or should I download them? thanks for any help

    Irrespective of your phone messaging service which is usually governed by your sim card - you need proper data settings for wifi & 3g

    Sounds like Vodafone have been trying to send you their settings in which case just run them to get set

    otherwise you'll need to go to the vodafone website (if its Vfone you are with) and request data (and mms) settings or just type them in

    I also found out that all old APN settings need to be removed for the new ones to work

    Have a look at Settings>Mobile Networks>APN and see what you have already

    Another note - there are always different settings for PAYG account than monthly contract account

    This behaviour is usually when its failing security log-in, especially if you have tried to connect at some time and entered the routers password incorrectly, the phone has remembered the (incorrect) password and associated it with that router. So it fails each login.

    My G300 is on a newer Android system so may be bit different but in 'settings -wifi' selecting a particular router there is a 'forget' option. Do this for any routers. Scan and try connecting to yours again making very sure of the password when asked to input it check the upper/ lower case characters, 1 an l, 0 and o or O and so on. Mine has an option to show the password characters your putting in instead of turning it to *'s.

    Data settings are not important for Wifi, only 3G. With the correct password it will connect to Wifi even with the wrong data settings.

    thanks for all your help. i think there was some doubt about the password in our house. I think OH set one when we first got Virgin internet but I don't remember having to do anything when I got my laptop a couple of years ago and he's not 100% sure! Or is it the set of numbers on the side of the router?

    You can reset your own router password

    user = virgin
    password = password
