I very much doubt you can get out of a contract due to this. More details are required what is causing the outage? Are you in some remote location? Is it a handset set issue? As far as I know other O2 customers are working.
Have you reported the issue to o2? what have they said?0 -

Its an issue across 02 affecting (in their words) "some customers"- same as last time, no text no phone available, no specific geographical areas of the problem either- my hubby who is working just down the road and on 02 too has no problems! ....- there's loads of unhappy peops on the O2 forum...... just getting really really fed up of it ...surely there has to be something?0

Mine is not working either. Having checked O2 website, there does seem to be a problem. Just hope it doesn't last 24 hours like last time...0

Ah so its o2 issue that they have admitted to, it will be in the terms & conditions normally if after X days without service. I suspect you will be due at least a refund on a pro-rata basis for when you have been without the service, again it will be n o2 t's & c's.0 -
I am also without service and as the o2 website states:
"We've got some problems with our phone service right now. Some phone numbers might not be working. Those numbers are not location specific"
I am sure that o2 will offer some compensation for the lack of service but the inconvenience and potential loss of work is considerable.
Is there a way out?
Which other networks use the same infrastructure as o2...GiffGaff, Orange?0 -

Tesco Mobile as well. That is what I am on and can't get any service.0 -
No compensation - just line credit for network unavailability. To be fair to a greater or lesser extent, all networks have their downtime, and I'm currently with 3UK who have been pretty reliable over be last 3 years. What you want to aim for is the 'least worst'!0

NOTIFICATION OF MAINTENANCE TO THE O2 2G NETWORK
We’re carrying out maintenance on parts of the 2G network between 10pm on 12/10/2012 and 6am on 13/10/2012. This will result in the loss of 2G services to sites for up to 4 hours in Saint Albans, Hatfield and Potters Bar (reference number 1869666).
If you've got a 2G phone, you won't be able to use it for calls, texts, email, or internet. Our 3G network will be working as normal.0
