Moved from a packed 4 bed. Had 4 quotes and they all came out to see house and measure our oversized furniture. Full packing service over 2 days and had quotes ranging from £700 to £1800 with Pickfords at £1800.

Used an independent company that charged us £1100. They packed up everything while we were at work. We have 4 ceiling to floor wardrobes and about 20 tall CD cases with 10 completely filled with books ceiling to floor bookcases. All were dismantled and packed and put together at the other end. We exchanged, they collected the keys and everything was put back together before I got home. Made them a stupendous lunch and lots of tea and biscuits.

No, we did not tip them

we did tip them, only £10 each though as we kept them thoroughly tea'd up during the day with bacon butties for breakfast & lunch.

They worked so hard & were so cheerful & professional throughout, thought they'd earned the price of a couple of pints each

And a quick question from me.

When do you actually pay the removal company - before or after moving?

The companies I had quote wanted payment when you confirmed the booking and if you then cancelled you were in to a sliding scale of cancellation fees.

    I've been Money Tipped!
    Interesting thread, thanks guys

I have just been quoted £928 inc vat and insurance (with a £45 excess on each item damaged) to move from our 3 bed bungalow to within a 10 mile radius (not sure exactly where yet as we are going into rented). We are in Suffolk.

Delay waiver insurance is another £76
Packing is another £245 plus Vat

Does include loan of boxes for packing if needed.

This is a local independent, but from what others have said it does seem a bit on the steep side. I am getting a couple of other quotes to see how this compares.

The insurance seems especially poor value. If the lorry caught fire and we lost everything, a £45 excess on each item would mean that only larger items of furniture and some electricals eg TV would be covered.

The whole lot has to be paid up front although the salesman couldn't tell me exactly how many days before the move. I have to ring up the office and ask! If I pay by credit card there is an extra charge of 3-4%. He told me that as they are BAR registered they have to get the payment up front.

No reduction for moving Mon-Wed, which will hopefully be what we are doing - going into the rental a week or more before completion.

Yes - moved last October and gave our 4 men £20 each - it was a 2 day move due to the distance and they used 2 vans - gave the 4 at the delivery end £20 each too.

They worked like absolute trojans - we moved from a big house to another big house - I was quite shocked at how much stuff we had. They moved an entire workshop too - including a lathe OH and I could barely drag across the floor.

We paid after - but on the day.

Another company we had a quote wanted cleared funds before the move.

    Reading to Sandhurst/Camberley.

We moved from near Reading to Lincolnshire and paid £2200 to a local company - who supplied all the boxes free, tissue & bubble wrap, tape, marker pens and huge bags for coats and bedding, all free -(well included in the cost) and loaned us the wardrobe boxes - we elected to do our own packing - the cost for them to pack was about £250.

It was a choice between them and another local firm - similar money for the removals - the one we chose worked on a Saturday which meant we moved out on a Friday (completion day) and moved into our new house on the Saturday. With the other company we would have had to wait until the Monday to move.
