Removal costs for 3 bed house

I'm interested in using Pickfords for moving our stuff from our 3 bedroom home. I want them to do nearly all the packing as my physical condition only allows me to do a bare minimum of sensitive personal items, paperwork, etc. The move is to a house around 20 miles away. Is £1,500 a reasonable estimate or am I being optimistic?

Pickfords are expensive and overall have a not great reputation.

We've used Pickfords twice now & both times they have been completely brilliant. We went for a full pack service, moving < 5miles moving a 4-bed townhouse. The house we were moving from had poor access so no doubt we were charged a premium for that. We paid £1600 for the first move from the townhouse to the rental, and £1400 from rental to 3 bed, so your £1500 sounds about right ( longer distance).

The price for us also included various transit/contents/late key insurances too. Pickfords for us were actually the cheapest of the national companies (we got quotes from Britannia, Bishops Move, Pickfords & a local firm), and did an amazing job with a pretty difficult move.

Tea & biccies on the hour every hour & bacon butties for breakfast & lunch kept them very happy (as did the small tip at the end)!

  • Thise prices are crazy. We used Simply Removals (move only, not packin) to move us from a 2 bed flat into a 3 bed house. Cost just £288, though we were only moving 5 miles.

The OP has a problem in that they are unable to pack themselves. OP, can you get someone to pack for you...a friend perhaps? This might then reduce the charge overall and you might get within your £1500 estimate/budget.

The packing charge is a small amount of the overall cost. For a 3 bed house it depends how much stuff you've got. The last Pickfords 3 bed move I saw was for a single person who had lots of ornaments/tat/pictures and it took 3 men a whole day to pack the van (it was all going into storage).

Those vans don't come cheap. The labour's probably costed at £200/man/day.

Last time I moved (7 years ago) I used these people

    for removal and storage.

They were very good and efficient. Don't think they were particularly cheap but cost isn't everything.

Doubt you'll get the choice of doing 'part of the packing'. It'll be all or nothing. For what it's worth, my last removal men packed for me and I would never ever dream of packing again. (I've moved with them three times now and wouldn't consider using anyone else). I've moved house several times and each time you have to pack things yourself, it's absolutely soul destroying. Wrapping every single plate, packing every book... just a nightmare. My last lot even took my spare bed apart for me (slatted underneath) and went out of their way to make it as stress free as possible.

Which areas are you moving from/to?

  • Thanks for all your replies. I forgot to mention that I have chosen Pickfords because I have a 10% discount with them through my company perks scheme.
