If you have a Tesco clubcard, they regularly offer a free bag for life voucher. I've got several so never have to use the checkout bags. And they live up to the claim - when my first bag gave up, it was replaced free of charge! Excellent.
    Bye for now,
    Paul

No free bags (yet) but Sainsbury's have a recycling bin for old bags which is great if you've left your bags for life in the kitchen or the boot and end up using more carrier bags due to leaky memory! x Claire

Just a quick note to say that this amnesty has a double-reward.
It doesn't stop there! From the 23rd April every time you reuse your old carriers, or Bags for Life in our ASDA stores we will reward you with a green voucher, which will enable your local school to become more environmentally friendly, through a collector scheme to win a fantastic range of sustainable rewards!

So make sure you've got your Bag For Life handy next time you visit your local ASDA and make a real difference to your environment and pupils' environmental education within your community!

    From this page.

So sa long as you re-use your bag for life or usual carrier bag its win-win!

Just a quick update. I took my loyal Tesco custom to Asda today and attempted to get my free bag for life. Took 5 bags to the man at the door who said throw them in the recycling box and take a bag for life at the checkout. All nice and easy so far.

At the checkout, I grabbed a bag for life from the bag dispenser and placed it with the rest of the shopping. The SA looked at me like I was stealing it. I said "I've put 5 bags in the recycler, can I have my bag for life?" She looked at me like she didn't know what I was on about. So I put the bag for life back and spoke to the man at the door again. He wasn't sure what the offer was about (despite having a massive banner outside the store) so he got on his walkie talkie and spoke to a CS person. He then went to a *locked* cupboard and gave me one voucher, which I will be using next time I shop.

I shop online more these days than instore, I used to use the bags for life when I did. I have been giving the driver my carrier bags back as I had a large collection.
I was wondering why they don't have a box at the cash desk with returned bags in them for people to reuse if they wish.. I guess they'd need to be checked first for any tears or holes though?

Good idea on the bag for life though and when I get back in store, I'll take some bags with me.

If you do get one or more bags for life, remember to use them when you shop! Don't just get them and leave them in the cupboard.

I was looking at Asdas website and it stated the following,

From the 9th April we will be offering our customers an on-going opportunity to recycle their carrier bags in our stores and will be offering the first million customers who bring 5 or more carrier bags back into store for recycling a free Bag For Life!
The Bag For Life is a stronger bag, which means you can carry more shopping in one bag. Not only that, our new design is made of 100% recycled material, so even better for the environment, and at only 5p they are a fantastic buy! You will never need to use another carrier bag again, as if your Bag For Life gets damaged - we will replace it absolutely free!

Does this mean that you can purchase these bags in store for 5p?
  • i am going to asdas tonight so i just phoned them and asked if i could exchange more than 5 carrier bags for more than one bag for life or is it only 1 bag per customer, she asked her manager and the manager said you can exchange as many carrier bags as you want for as many bags as you want on a 5-1 ratio...thats handy because i have about 30 carrier bags lol...

On the voucher it says "one free bag for life per visit". So you can get as many coupons as you like, but you may only redeem one per visit (not sure whether this is enforced). Vouchers have an expiry date of 30/4/07.
