I was nosing around on The Co-operative website, having noted yet again there was nothing remotely organic in the offers section.

Did a Search on organic and came up with a salad recipe made with The Co-operative organically-grown salad potatoes.

Has anyone ever seen organic food in the Co-op ?

There's a bigger than average but not superstore Co-op in next town and I could go investigate of I'm at all likely to find anything.

I have a small Co-op in my village and I have only ever seen organic chopped tomatoes but as yours sounds like a larger store they may have a bigger selection.

My nearest Co-op is useless, was very disappointed. Bigger ones look nice though but never been in one to see what they have.

Made an unpleasant and rare trip to Morries (so horribly busy) this morning:

Org cucumber £1.25 (Spain) seems nice
Org tomatoes - had both plum and vine, vine were on offer but I can't remember the price, £1.50 ish maybe. Am hoping to order a veg box later so didn't buy them but both looked ok, no idea on taste.
Org carrots 85p and rainbow carrots £1 - the rainbow carrots looked good, would have bought if needed them.
Org apples - only ones they had were from USA disappointingly. Should be stocking English.

I've never found even that much organic produce in the local Morrisons Kirri.

Last year the EU and USDA did a deal whereby organic food with EU leaf logo or USDA organic label would be accepted as equivalent. Problem is that the USDA allows things that aren't allowed in EU.

Ella's Kitchen, the baby food company, has been bought by an American company called.. Ella's Kitchen. So if either standard is seen as equivalent which one will the food be made to now ? Will it be made in the USA where they can use more chemicals and practices EU farmers don't and just shipped in ?

So nope, I'm against the Americanisation of organic food. Green & Black's owned by Kraft now Ella's Kitchen American-owned. Probably thin edge of the wedge.

Soon it'll be Horizon organic UHT milk from the States with added fish oils and goodness knows what. :(

For anyone interested, today's Riverford seasons veg box contained:
    Punnet of mushrooms
    6 tomatoes
    3 large leeks
    1 cauliflower
    1 head of broccoli
    9 chunky carrots
    4 parsnips
    9 smallish onions

    Price 13.45

    And in the salad bag:
    Vine tomatoes
    Cucumber
    Watercress
    2 large Ramiro peppers

    Price 6.95

Fruit and veg are our main expense as we eat so much of them but this lot will make lots of meals over the next few days:)

Lovely not to have to trek round the shops to buy it.

My local Morries has a fair amount, I've seen other org veg in there - and recently the store had a big fruit and veg makeover too, we have chilled mist wafting over the new aisle of loose veg now, never seen anything like it in the UK.. and all sorts of unusual veg and various more gourmet type veg items inc heirloom tomato varieties etc. So it all looks really good, but still needs a huge more variety in organic.

and anyway the crowds make it so unpleasant to shop there..

Must admit though I was nearly tempted by the non org 50p pineapple in Morrisons this morning!

    I don't want food from USA ^ :(

Thanks for posting :) Agree, it is lovely having it delivered, I wen the past week without going in a supermarket!

Am thinking of trying their Salad Box this week as I need mostly salad items for the pets. Still faffing though as I fancy a bit more veg for dinners too but don't want to get two boxes this week. Shame they don't do a small veg bag I could add to the salad box..

I wish they would do the boxes more 50:50 veg to salad. Am almost tempted to order that combo ^

Thanks alfsmum, you reminded me I need to do my Riverford order today.

I thought Riverford did a small salad box .. they do a small fruit bag, OH had one recently, 3.75.

Alternatively try Abel & Cole as you can miss out things you don't want so they may be more flexible ??

I think I'm going to do a Riverford order of odd bits so I get their mushrooms for Saturday morning, and OH wants more ham and leek tarts (2.95 for 2).

I use Abel & Cole like a weekly milkman for milk, eggs, yogurt, Cheddar and odd bits.

Using Ocado to get a veg box every other week and for stuff like Gail's Bread, Daylesford chicken, and less often but still get Duchy Originals from Waitrose unsmoked organic back bacon which now has a logo on saying Great Taste Awrds Gold Medal winner 2012. :T

Riverford do a small salad bag or a small fruit bag but not a small veg bag - am using up the remains from last week's Ocado box for me so mainly need to top up for pets only this week on salad but if they'd done a £4 ish bag on top I'd have had it as well.

I'm also looking at the small gourmet box from A&C as a better mix - both have cut off this evening so need to decide quick! Just hope I don't get too used to them as I need to be out growing my own again hopefully next month.

I would love to be able to use either of these weekly like that ^ instead of having to go to a supermarket for odd bits but they both deliver on Friday which is difficult now and if/when working will be impossible. :(

Oh and to add I didn't like the organic pears from Ocado last week. They seemed brown inside though though the outside was fine.
