Organic food in supermarkets

I like Sainsburys Organic cheddar. I think I prefer it to Tescos and it's also slightly cheaper on their current offer as Sainsburys packs are bigger than Tesco.

I hardly ever find organic cheese anywhere else though

Beckyy, besides Sainsbury's, Tesco, Waitrose, Ocado, Abel & Cole and Riverford ie the usual suspects, I've bought organic cheese in Budgens. Someone posted a couple of pages back that they had seen some in Lidl.

Kirri have you seen any in Marks & Spencer or ASDA ?

Godminster sells cheeses online www.godminster.com but very expensive. www.fortnumandmason.com has several pages of cheese available by mail order and actually not all as expensive as you'd think. www.cawscenarth.co.uk does mail order.

I think I stuck up other places previously so maybe search organic cheese on the forum search ??

^ Not that I've noticed but I've not really been looking for either in there will check properly next time I'm in either of them. Think I've had some from Morrisons in the past.

My mother is up from the back of beyond Monday with car so I might nip into Morrisons and have a look. They have a big cheese counter, bigger than any of the other supermarkets here but not noticed organic in there. I need to be thinking about veggie week from 1st Feb so need more cheese.

Hoping new Riverford cook book will help me. Thick paperback was 40% off at 9.99

I've only seen it in the run of the mill packaged cheese aisle iirc, my local Morrisons has cheese in two places, the other section in another aisle is more speciality cheeses but it's on an island rather than a serviced cheese counter but not seen any on there.

Ahh Where do I start

1)free range eggs:( had no idea did notice over years they seem cheaper and more companies like hellmans, maccy ds and m&s pledge all free range often wonder if that means quiches and pastas too?

So egg buying is it best to

1)buy local as in farm
2)any specfic brand better ie happy eggs?
3)or should I just buy organic-what are benefits of oragnic eggs? assume its drugs given to hen filter down to eggs?

2)gm issue rememer in late 90s it was more of an issue with icelnd saying no gm doubt that still stands today. I think the consumers forgitton about it, less worried or dont even consider it.

The food lobbys hugly powerful in the states.
remember seeing it on jaimies food revoloution how they eat unhealthy diets, food pyramids looking at most on tv would say majority americans have quite unhealthy diets and eat lots processed foods.

Im bit annoyed kraft aggressive takeover cadburys they chaged dairy milk so now tastes rank. Anyone different organic choc solution thats ideally british and not owned by huge company.
Like I say when searching cereals noticed kellogs do some but must be usa only as cant find them on uk sites.

3)blogs was contemplating one myself im sure i seen links to other websites on other blogs. unless each providers different as most people use google blogger.

It doesnt cost huge amount to have own website.

4)free range-Always thourght cows spet long periods time outside?
is british farming better tha eu farming. A free range sheep well most sheep are allowed to roam.

Would venision always be fairly free range?
ducks and goose are they intesivly farmed as much as other poultry?

5)veal ,mentioned to hubby about supporting british rose veal and he thinks veal cruel. Its the waitrose same one as jimmy was tryig to push trashco to sell?

6)irganic dairy I accidentally ordered organic milk as 6pints was £2.38 which I think i similar price I pay in co-op , saisburys, spar for non organic. so 12pints £4.76.

If i doid my usual stock up lidls then 12pints cost me £3 so paying extra £1.76 or in lidls terms an extra 4pints, 5pints if add 26p.

But im sat here drinking it and maybe im imagining it but organic seems to taste nicer?

7)The switch. I do feel husnand will be ongoing battle as he will just see increased price. when eldest wa undre 2 everything was organic used to drive him potty.

having 3kids tried some of the kids organic ranges.

used hipp organic formula.
tried most og organix frame find the gingerbread men bland and the crisps.
The peter rabbit range is quite sweet.

tempted to try organic chocolate cereal.

Edwardia noticed every minute thing you buy is organic ie pepper few other things.

Do you buy organic bread/bread flour
organic juice?

Just curious as must be quite hard getting all organic in tesco or asda.

looked up budgens sure we had one city centre but no all surrounding villages cant get to?:(weird to think independant supermarkets still exist.

Ocado delivery here and even with discount its made me think.
How do i buy more organic on a budget.

conclusion intend to check out what lidls and aldis stock organic as we regular shoppers in both.

Try having sucessful veg plot.

Read some small farms have practically organic produce just organic certifications expensive so maybe thats an option.

right no we focussing on meat.we going to have to eat less of it.

Think i read 2most important things were apples and milk unsure why.


Plan is try different brands and sneak them in one at a time until they what we buy all time.

jam.

Re Happy Eggs ^ google them,think on YouTube, were investigated and filmed undercover by one of the animal rights places. Shocking footage.

I prefer organic eggs but also welfare of chickens important to me, a lot of free range chickens are packed in so tight they cannot access the outside anyway so the bigger/more commercial the free range I try to avoid as the bigger the flock size, less space is likely. I am happy to buy local if I can see the chickens in a small flock, roaming outside. Obviously though no idea what fed on though.. for me it's hard to balance organic and vegetarian/vegan.

Re the fr eggs in processed foods, think only M&S/Waitrose still say that - was it Morrisons recently in the news for going back to caged eggs in items??? Disappointing supermarkets even stock those eggs.

Re taste of organic milk, another issue is that although milk from milkman more expensive probably ie 85p per pint, it does come in a glass bottle unlike anything in the supermarkets.

There was earlier discussion on here think about raw milk? Did anyone see Selfridges (I think?) prosecuted for selling it - but it's not illegal to sell if it's sold from the farmer or at a farmer's market - I did see an article about it being very popular at a farmer's market.

Yoghurts - Rachel's or Yeo Valley, often on offer

The organic offers cycle round, if on a budget maybe just buy when on offer, no need to buy to have in all the time as such.

Apples were always the most heavily sprayed crop, though really everything is sprayed heavily. Was also linked to breast cancer.

If on a budget, maybe the way to go is nothing processed, natural foods as much as poss and organic where poss. To do a 100% organic diet is time consuming due to shopping around and ordering/visiting specialist shops, the supermarkets just cannot cater for it.
