Organic food in supermarkets

gentleorange, I'm a regular Ocado customer. I have the Total Savings Pass which saves me 10% on the organic veg boxes. My experience has been that they were better value for money than the Abel & Cole box of same size.
With Abel & Cole you can express preferences and swap other veg in, which you can't do with Ocado. However, with Ocado you order a box when you want. With Abel & Cole you can order a box weekly or fortnightly but you've got to bother to stop it arriving rather than order when you want.
What I tend to do is order veg from Ocado and Abel & Cole as I want it rather than as a box. If I see the Ocado box lists a lot of veg I'd be buying that week and I will save money with the discount, I buy that though.
Abel & Cole has a huge range of veg, much of which can't be bought in the supermarket and I particularly love their organic globe artichokes, Jerusalem artichokes, salsify, kohl rabi, fennel and spaghetti squash.
Have to say that I'm verry happy with Ocado (NOT owned by Waitrose) and Abel & Cole. It would be impossible for me to eat organic without them - despite a total of six supermarkets in/around the town I live in. :eek:0 -
I found a section on the Ocado website which has lots of reduced price Christmas food etc.

I didn't realise Ocado had a veg box service! I'm quite keen on Riverford from what I've read of them, but for now I'll have another look at Ocado thank you!
Actually does Ocado have a box for this week, does anyone know? I see dates of 20-26 December, then 3-9 January, nothing for the week inbetween!0 -

I've just been looking at the Riverford boxes and they do much smaller boxes than Ocado and better variety and I guess there is more traceability in the Riverford than Ocado which has very little details in comparison.
Would be more convenient using Ocado though as the thing that puts me off veg box schemes is the anytime that day midweek delivery and I have nowhere for it to be left outside.0 -
Tesco is trialling organic veg boxes with Soil and Seed. www.soilandseed.co.uk in the London area only atm and they are still on introductory offer until 6th January for example small box £9
Ocado has own brand organic veg now so I guess boxes come from their usual suppliers ??
No Riverford in my areaRiverford is a franchise operation so in theory the veg and service you get in one area could be better/worse than another.
gentleorange, checked Ocado while signed in and nope, no veg boxes until 3rd Jan. Looks like Ocado has completely run out of quite a lot of organic food, I couldn't buy any of the Daylesford chicken or Duchy mince I wanted to be delivered tomorrow.0 -
Hi gentleorange
I have veg boxes from Riverford Organics. They do just salad and just fruit selections

Stocked up on some Lidl organic wholewheat pasta today. I didn't even look at the milk as I read somewhere on this thread that it feels watered down. I looked at their fruit and vegs but I saw nothing organic.
Oh and I also bought yet another set of thermal underwear from them this time a traditional off white colour, 50% Angora. £13 for long sleeve top and long johns.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
Quasar, my local Lidl usually has pasta, milk, carrots, sometimes Heirloom tomatoes.
I have tried the organic semi-skimmed milk and both times husband and I thought that compared to usual milk (Moo) it does taste watery. Compared it to Abel & Cole fresh semi-skimmed as well and that tasted much better than the Lidl milk and my mother agreed.0 -
Kirri have you tried this ?
Spotted on hollandandbarrett.com - Granovita organic tofu, pepper and tomato pate, 125g resealable tin 1.59. Vegan, dairy free, gluten free and organic. It's also low carb at 3g carbs per 100g.0 -

I have never seen organic food at Lidl but then it is abit out of my way to go there just for a few bits when I can do an online shop and get more organic food for less hassle.'Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves'0
