Haven't tried Organic Surge, be interested to hear what it's like. Have used FIN, it's nice enough but other brands I prefer.

Re the American brands, presume the organic shops in the UK wouldn't stock brands that didn't come up to the UK standard???

This food shop looks interesting for anyone near Hackney.

  • I have heard Organix's hair care range are good especially the coconut milk collection. Has anyone tried them?

Seems to me like there isn't a compulsory standard..

bornintoit I'm a complete beginner at the organic beauty stuff and I've been using Johnson's Baby Shampoo for years but I don't suppose that's as pure as I'd like to think :(

It's a minefield... but then a good starting point is avoiding places like Boots, Superdrug etc (to me they just seem like shops full of chemical products although lately I'm sure they are probably stocking some org stuff) and opting for options in organic/natural health shops, should avoid the main nasties ie SLS etc. I used to have lots of books on this but once I found my fave brands I sold the books and haven't tried a lot of new stuff.
  • The major difference between veg box organics and supermarket I find is they seem to taste better with veg boxes and esp if they have the soil on them. It seems to add to the flavour. It also helps them keep longer I find.

I have tried veg boxes from Ocado and Abel & Cole and found that the Ocado one was more generous for the money.

I find that how well vegetables last often depends whether they have been refrigerated or not. I don't refrigerate tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines, most root veg and cauliflower or anything with soil on.

Carrots last longer in fridge, so do celery and mushrooms and kale will keep in the fridge for nearly two weeks.

If root veg is starting to go wrinkly and a bit soft, I have found that submerging it in cold water for a few hours improves it.

Taste may be due more to being dug up/picked fresh. God knows how long or how the supermarkets store their stuff, especially carrots which always come soggy in bags..

Growing your own gives you a whole new perspective on storage of veg ie potatoes, garlic, onions and winter squash are able to be stored for months and months...

non food but have found a new brand of organic body products - Deep Steep, that I can only recommend highly

I got the body wash and it smells amazing and feels amazing quality and very gentle on skin:

    http://www.feelunique.com/p/Deep-Steep-Rosemary-Mint-Organic-Body-Wash-237ml

Ingredients: Organic Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice, Infusion of Organic Herbs; Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Geranium Maculatum (Geranium) Flower Extract, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Leaf Extract, Coco Glucoside, Aroma (Organic and Wildcrafted Aroma Blend), Glycerin (Vegan), Caprylic Acid (Coconut Fatty Acid), Organic Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Tocopherol (Vitamin E) Natural, Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Organic Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid.

So the ingredients are pretty safe, what do you think Edwardia? No alcohol like Weleda products and it works like a normal shower gel you buy in the supermarket without the nasty ingredients eg SLS

They have quite a few products eg body lotions, butters, hand creams in different flavours, http://www.feelunique.com/brands/deep-steep

Compare those ingredients to "Burt's Bees Baby Bee Shampoo and Wash" on amazon which says "We never use synthetic chemical preservatives, surfactants, or colourings", "All products are made from natural ingredients, using proven, time tested recipes", yet the ingredients are:

aqua (water, eau), decyl glucoside, coco-betaine, lauryl glucoside, sucrose laurate, glycerin, betaine, coco-glucoside, sodium cocoyl hydrolyzed soy protein, parfum (fragrance), glyceryl oleate, sodium chloride, xanthan gum, glucose, citric acid, glucose oxidase, lactoperoxidase, benzyl benzoate, geraniol, linalool
