  • I was placing an Ocado order anyway so I phoned customer services and they said they'd provide an organic 11 item veg box. I was a little bit sceptical that it would actually turn up, but it did:)

    For £16.20 I got 6 x carrots, 2 x fennel, a bag of brussel sprouts, 6 x parsnips, 1 x red cabbage, 3 x onions, 5 x potatoes, 3 x swede, 1 x lettuce, 5 x big tomatoes and a bag of green beans.

Until March I get free delivery and saving discount with Ocado so I will continue with them until March, then compare prices with Riverford. Thanks for the advice!

Remembered my manners so a belated welcome to the thread to gentleorange and calluna :T

gentleorange seems like you got a personalised deal there :D well done ! Will have to try that myself when my delivery savings pass runs out ;) Well heck, why not ? I do it for my CrackBerry.

bornintoit we used to shop at Lidl quite a bit, but now just make the odd foray in for things like additive free prosciutto and cheeses. There's not enough in there to be able to do a weekly organic shop though ditto ASDA and Morrisons.
  • Thanks! I'm impressed with the quality I have to say. A couple of the potatoes are a funny looking shape compared to what I'm used to, one looks like a very fat heart:D but it all looks fresh.

The tomatoes in particular look beautiful, and the frilly lettuce, so I'm making up a salad to go with our cod tonight:)
  • Edwardia, in ASDA I got three packs of pheasant breasts reduced to clear from £5 to £2.18 and one pack of organic chicken legs from £2.66 to £1.39. It's a shame they do not do organic meat at your local ASDA as I tend to find quite a few reductions in ASDA and they are all in the chilled sections here i.e still safe to eat.

Welcome gentle orange, great to see new people here.

Monsanto are here in the UK at Sainsburys and Waitrose selling Bellaverde® Sweet Stem Broccoli under their sister company Seminis.

well done bornintoit :T great research.

Monsanto is the brand of the Devil :mad::mad::mad::mad: responsible for much of the GM stuff around.

Re: pheasant breasts for whole pheasant 659g minimum I pay 3.55 at Abel & Cole and 4 pheasant breasts 400g minimum are 5.19. The ASDA chicken legs are a good price even before YS as I pay arounf 3.50 for 4 Daylesford Organics chicken legs at Ocado.

  • Hi all, hope you all had a good Christmas and are ready for the New Year.
As promised I am back to report on my shopping experiences with both Ocado and Abel and Cole.
First Ocado, have found them totally wonderful. Lovely helpful delivery staff and customer services when I called them. Service and quality are excellent. When I visit the supermarket it is at reduction time and I thought I would miss this but having discovered that by frequently editing my order within 72hrs of delivery I get offered what they call flash sale items I am more than happy. I have my 3rd order coming tomorrow/today and in it is an organic leg of lamb and med veg and salad box half price. Also got for mum various fruit and veg all half price. So my need for a bargain has been satisfied. Everything except for my milk and baccy was on offer and I had a voucher, so total spend excluding baccy was £85 after a total saving of £89.
As for Abel and Cole, again very impressed. 3rd order arriving on new years day. Love their eggs especially the sizeable ones, the bacon is the best we've found and although expensive we will just eat less. The first order included a small veg box and I was a bit dissapointed by the amount it contained and the toms were over ripe and mushy so lost them. Other than that everything else was great quality. We love kale and haven't been able to find organic other than at tesco, but A and C are cheaper. Added bonus I got 2 freebies in my last order, a bottle of cold press olive oil and a free carton of orange juice. They deliver v early, I think I must be one of the first drops. Both times between 5 and 6am. I'm like an excited child and can't wait to find my boxes of goodies on the doorstep. It's like magic and the food fairies have been whilst we were asleep.
So I would recommend both to anyone considering online or organic shopping.

One of the reasons we now eat organic meat is because we are trying to avoid gm and few supermarkets if any can guarantee that their meat is from animals that haven't been fed any gm feed. Also when I pay for meat I expect meat not 85% plus water etc.
I also find fish a problem now. Love tuna especially, but won't buy anything that comes from the pacific no matter how its caught, won't buy prawns unless they are atlantic after seeing how they are farmed and treated in asia. Only buy fresh sea trout and salmon if its wild and not farmed. I guess sme will think me over fussy, but although we are on a tight budget we just eat less and better quality.
  • Morning all!

I've been a lurker for ages on the site, but bite the bullet and actually joined a few days ago. I regularly stalk this thread, and today is my first day as a veggie... I was going to wait until tomorrow, but in a weird OCD way, I want to start on a Monday rather than a Tuesday :) I actually eat mostly vegan, but I haven't found a nice alternative to cow's milk. My husband and sons are omnivores, but to my mother's horror, we'd rather pay more for good quality meat and fish, and eat it less often.

We eat organic as much as we can. I have milk and a large veg box delivered each week from there, and get pretty much everything else from Tesco or Asda. I shop online though, and get it delivered (my two toddlers are no fun in a supermarket!!) - I tend to type in 'organic' in the search box and pick what to buy from the results there, but I do spend a lot on groceries, so am going to pre-plan proper menus and stick to them from today.

I was reading the article on downgrading which labels you buy, and how much this can save you... Unfortunately, I think I'm right in thinking this is going to be tricky to implement for me, as I buy pretty much all our food fresh (nothing ready-made) and I can't remember seeing anything own-brand (other than wholewheat pasta) that's organic and cheaper.

Anyway, waffling - apologies! Hope you all have a happy new year, and I'll continue to stalk this thread with interest!! :D

alphabet soup welcome to the thread and hope the veggieness goes well ! :T

After our encounter with the Tesco pork, I called or emailed ASDA, Lidl, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Waitrose about GM feed.

It's not allowed in organic food in the UK, but in the non-organic ranges only Waitrose was able to say that none of their own brand ranges are fed on GM feed.

Organic food is not readily available in every supermarket in the UK. France has organic supermarkets, Aldi has organic ranges in Germany and USA. In USA, Safeway is a big player in the USA organic market and even Target and Wal-Mart sell organic food.

It seems like the companies which care about food are the ones who care about organic food as well and maybe it's not coincidence that their customer service is great too ?

rufydoofyM agree with you on the fish and that's why I am really concerned that the FDA has allowed the GM salmon.

Last chance today to stock up on organic tinned tomatoes 2 for £1 at Sainsburys's and Borges organic EV olive oil 500ml 50% off 2.34 at Morrisons. Think quite a few milk offers expire tomorrow as well.
