  • Wild West Foods makes the following claim “The core ranges are nuggets, Gourmet (MSG Free) and All Natural (No artificial ingredients at all)”. After purchasing the Original Beef Jerky I discovered from the ingredients list that it does however contain MSG. I thought that the claim meant that ALL the core ranges are MSG Free and that Gourmet meant Gourmet Powder (another term for MSG) and all natural when it turns out that the claim actually means that one range is nuggets, one range is Gourmet AND MSG Free and one range is All Natural.

Was I just alittle on the stupid side or is this misleading?

Just nipped in to read and I think food manufacturers are generally very misleading.

Heinz says no artificial ingredients but glucose-fructose syrup doesn't exist in nature.

Not naive or stupid at all bornintoit. 100% natural means nothing legally because it's not certified whereas organic should have a logo (there are several).

    HTH !

Thanks for your reply. I know I'm pretty new to this but I had thought I had learned quite alot so felt an idiot for getting caught out. As it happens I didn't like the taste of their beef jerky so I won't miss it.

Marks and Spencer does a beef biltong or jerky I think , not sure which it was - but it was made for M&S by Jody Scheckter's Laverstoke Park Farm which is an organic biodynamic farm. That might be better.

Nipped into Lidl today and picked up prosciutto di Parma additive free and only 1.99 a pack ;) also organic onions 68p and 2 pints organic semi-skimmed milk 99p. The organic carrots were £1 for 750g and lots had splits so I didn't bother. They didn't have any Nature and More organic Heirloom tomatoes (200g, 2.49)

Sainsbury's was busy but not bedlam. Got two organic rump steaks for £5 for dinner. :):)

I went to Sainsburys today, I didn't get any reduced organic meat this time. Sanisbury's SO Organic tinned chopped tomatoes are two for £1, normally 79p each.

So my dad has visited me for xmas and he hands me a Natural Relaxing Scent - Deluxe Natural Gift Box.

So how natural are the contents of this box? I'll give you an idea.

    Cream Bath Ingredients -:
Aqua, Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Cocamide DEA, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Chloride, Glycol Distearate, Parfum, PEG-150 Distearate, EDTA, Benzophenone-4, Citric Acid, Cocamide MEA, Laureth-10, Magnesium Nitrite, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Magnesium Chloride, Methylisothiazlinone, [+/-CI 19140, CI 17200, CI 42090].

Doesn't sound very natural to me!! The majority of the contents read similar to the above list of ingredients. The only thing that appears natural to me is the 100% cotton flannel.

Aqua is Latin for water, sodium chloride is the chemical name of salt. If you were making your own lemonade you might use citric acid which was a natural acid. Magnesium chloride is used in commercial tofu and was originally a natural mineral salt. Magnesium chloride was originally a natural hygroscopic salt which is most common in seagull poo and in underground caverns and mines. Where I say was it's because I think these can all be made in labs in industrial quantities.

The rest yeah it's like a chemistry lab, I agree !

I knew what aqua and sodium chloride were but didn't know about citric acid or magnesium cholride so thanks for that. Another product that I find misleading though, natural in big letters when the majority of ingredients are anything but natural.

I choose one of the ingredients at random to google and look what I found :-

Methylchloroisothiazolinone - In pure form or in high concentrations, methylchloroisothiazolinone can be a skin and membrane irritant or cause chemical burns. It was largely removed from most cosmetic products except for those with only short duration skin contact such as rinse-offs.

I dread being given stuff like that ^ as presents and must admit to putting it on Ebay... family know I only use organic toiletries for the past 10+ years yet still buy stuff I won't use...

In the USA there's no regulation for beauty products AFAIK so manufacturers can put natural and organic when they aren't. Not sure about UK.

I bought Faith in Nature stuff to try in the Oxfam sale Kirri and OH is giving me Organic Surge stuff I got from Ocado 25% off. Not tried either of these before.
