aliwali, the Taifun tofu with basil is really good, I just cube it and add to salads.

I don't buy stuff from Israel which isn't an anti- Jewish religion thing on my part but it is very much an anti Israel stealing land and not enabling another country recognised by UN access to its own natural gas thing.

The food chain is global and has been since traders first travelled. If I refuse to buy organic green beans am I contributing to a business failure which will mean Kenyan families stay in poverty..if I don't buy Kentish apples will more orchards be grubbed (most have gone already)...then there's the budgetary considerations.

If it's EU organic certified then for me that's good enough and I will buy the carrots from Lidl or ASDA or Abel & Cole etc.

That's exactly how I feel about Israel but people don't always understand that.
As for beans from Kenya or Egypt etc I have mixed reasons but worry that we are in effect consuming their water supply as their aquifers are drained for farming. What happens to people when the water runs dry and the farming on such a large scale is unviable. The corporations move on, people have no work and the wells are empty, What is there for the local workers and families then ? I believe it would be better for them to work and farm for themselves and for the local communities and economies to benefit. I realise it may not be that simple but when you look on google maps there are many large round dead areas in these drier areas of the world including USA where wells have been drilled and crops irrigated until the water supply is exhausted and a new well is drilled and a fresh area of land is cultivated and so on. So many people worry about world oil supplies whilst it is fresh water that is a major concern in so many countries especially where ancient aquifers are being drained dry.
So with this in mind we are trying to eat more local and seasonally this year as well as organic.
  • Today was our A & C delivery day :D How I love Tuesdays.
As well as the usual milk, eggs and butter was a large organic chicken (now our cooker is fixed and the large oven works I don't have to worry about size, :j) The small one we had at Chrimbo was lovely so at 2.3kg £14.99 that's only £6.52 per kg so cheaper than Ocado and compares with Sainsbobs £6.39 per kg. We shall have a roast tomorrow, chicken sarnies and salad Thursday, chicken curry on Friday made with Daylesford organic curry powder (to be delivered from Ocado on Thursday) and then at the w/e I shall make soup and maybe a pie. This way I should get about 8 meals for 2 from the one bird :D
A & C sent a free lemon with the chicken so that was a nice bonus as we get through a few lemons a week.
Also in the delivery were the Biona salted crisps which we had with ham sarnies and salad tonight. Will be adding to next weeks order too. Not as crispy as walkers etc but they were organic and very tastey.
The Luscombe multi pack came too. 6 bottles for £8.99, ok not cheap but we rarely have alcohol so they're our treat. Just tried the Blueberry crush which is very nice, but quite a bit sweeter and a less distinctive flavour than the strawberry.

Took up a midweek smart pass with Ocado, 6 months for £14.99 so decided to split the order between tonight and Thursday night to take advantage of flash sale items. Tonight we had a flash sale organic pork joit 40% off and Thursday we have a Daylesford chicken coming also 40% off so both will go in the freezer. How I love online shopping. :D

Thanks for reminding me to find the organic chicken lurking in the bottom of the freezer Rufy ! You certainly get a lot of use out of yours. We get one meal, then the rest disappears into OH's lunch box, either as sandwiches or just as cold cuts with pickles, olives etc.

From Thursday, Lidl has 9 roll packs of recycled nouvelle soft for 2.49.
  • I figure the only way to justify spending so much on organic chicken is to make it go as far as possible by stripping the carcass of any scraps of meat prior to using it for stock and then adding the scraps to the soup as both my mum and gran did.

Chickens in the oven as I type and smells wonderful :)

Had to order organic petits pois as Ocado were out of organic peas. I have just added a portion of each to the pan and they are the same size and look identical yet peas are £1.47 and petit pois are £1.99 for the same weight 500g:mad: Not impressed !

^ the petit pois had awful reviews in comparison to the peas when I last checked. Weird if they are the same!

Anyone noticed how bad the stock levels on A&C are getting on veg? so many things I want seem to be out of stock. I've not been able to get sprouting broccoli for ages either.

Had to do emergency trip to the dreaded Morrisons this week - got organic little gem but no organic cucumbers and A&C are out too. It's a staple here so will have to try Waitrose now.
  • I'd love to try out Abel & Cole. Anyone fancy recommending me? Pm me a code if you have one. Thanks
