Organic food in supermarkets

^ Those 'lamb mac's make them look even more oven ready..
^ Don't like the sound of those eggs, sound a bit commercial rather than hen friendly?
Weirdly I got that Soil Assoc email about a week ago. I find there less available now in supermarkets than 10 odd years ago when it suddenly got popular due to GM. It shouldn't be something so difficult to get, makes me hate the supermarkets even more pushing their crud.
I used to use the Neal's Yard organic coconut oil on my hair - still have some in my cupboard but not used it in ages. Never tried any other oils.
I can't see the Wilko's folders on the website but I've been buying them for years.
Just cleared out under the sink and realised I've almost used my last bottle of Ecover washing up liquid so will be looking for any offers, will go and see if Wilkos still have it cheap.0 -
Why do I keep going to Tescos when I know its going to be an unpleasant experience? I keep hoping i will get some reduced stuff like many others on MSE, but most of the time, the only things I see reduced are only slightly reduced and not worth it, might as well pay full price for longer dated produce.
My organic milk went bad as i find organic milk goes bad really quicklyso I popped in for organic eggs and milk and had a wander around. My local branches just sell crap! There is hardly anything I want to buy in the store. I was looking at people's trolleys thinking....they are setting themselves up for so many lifestyle related problems. I was even looking at someone's trolley in shock and then she said hi, i knew her but as I was looking at the contents of her trolley I didn't notice her
I need to stick to online shopping, but I never seem to learn.
On the plus side, the bus turned up straightaway, the amount of times I have wasted 20 minutes or longer waiting for the bus, I could cook a meal in that time.0 -
I ordered a whole salmon from Ocado, for £14.38, average weight 2.4kg. I don't know if it is farmed salmon though.
They had a salmon side 1kg for £10 which is half price from £20 which i ordered a while ago, portioned and put in the freezer, it was really nice. So it seems buying a whole salmon is much cheaper, we shall see how I get on with cutting it up.
Can anyone recommend a good knife?
Edwardia, I use oil on my hair, tried coconut oil on Saturday. Fire Fox uses coconut oil too. Coconut oil tastes really nice too, if i knew how to cut a coconut I would buy them, they were on offer 2 for 1 pound at Waitrose or 69p each.0 -
I will catch up in a mo so appologies if i missed anything.
Yes i got my farmaround order and was quite happy with it, it's the first box (well bag) i've had from anywhere that had things in it that i have never tried or often buy.
I ordered a large veg bag and a small fruit bag
veg bag
brocoli 444g
courgettes 572g
aubergienes 506g
carrots 656g
jerusalem artichokes 680g
artichiokes 770g
spinach 226g
beetroots 685g
onions 565g
potatos 1.4kg
Fruit bag
3 oranges 540g
3 pears 455g
2 kiwis 139g
2 apples 340g
strawberries 250g
bananas x4 489g
Quite happy with it all, I only paid £16 all in with the 50% off code, however i will have to cost up the normall price to see how they compare to the other veg box sellers.
I have emailed suma directly who are looking into the rice to see if they can find out for me if it is or isn't organic. I assume they know the batch numbers. They have been very helpfull getting back to me, they are just making some enquires now to see why this mix up is going on with amazon.0 -

sophlowe45 oh dear that doesn't sound like a good Tesco experience
Do you have other supermarkets nearby or which you can order from ?
My local Tesco is dire and feels really but the one near my mother's place is beautiful and always looks immaculate.
The quality of the food in general is rubbish, I had carrots which went black the day after I'd bought them and the organic meat has a tendency to be tough.
During Organic September there was a lot of fresh organic produce in Tesco with extra Clubcard points offers but as soon as it finished - back to almost nothing.
My experience has been that when they have it, Lidl, ASDA and Morrisons do very good reasonably priced organic produce. I have not once found organic meat or poultry in two branches of Lidl or Morrisons and only organic salmon in ASDA.
Sainsbury's does seem to have an expanding range of organic food and can be cheaper than Waitrose and Ocado but not always.
It is feasible to go to Sainsbos (I've used two branches) and pick up organic beef, lamb, chicken, frozen peas, tinned tomatoes, stock cubes, digestives, shortbread, mixed dried herbs, Extra Virgin olive oil, teabags, milk, yogurt, sour cream, express porridge, Weetabix, baked beans and soup for example. Also fresh, frozen and tinned wild fish and organic fruit and veg.
If you like fish and are prepared to put up with finding a few bones in fillets then Iceland is pretty good for wild frozen fish. I suspect it's filleted by machine rather than by hand and that's why it's cheaper.
Frozen fish is usually frozen on board so it's often much fresher than the fresh stuff but it does go dry if kept in the freezer too long.
New fish labelling laws have been brought in recently which should tell you more about the fish.
If looking for organic YS your best bet is Waitrose because it stays where it is and isn't corralled into a YS section.0 -
Fish knives are very flexible because they are for filleting rather than hacking the whole fish up. If you are in a supermarket they should scale and gut beforehand and then they'll chop it however you want it at no extra charge. If you make soup or stock then ask for the trimmed stuff.
If you're doing it at home, just a big solid knife or even a cleaver if it's a whopping great fish.Me and OH had great fun with a big gurnard
I've tried cooking with coconut oil and it's not for me. Haven't used it on my hair but makes great foot/body moisturiser. Was very pleased with the olive oil experiment0 -

So looks like amazon are falsly advertsing it as orgainc. Did get a refund after live chat but now i'm stuck with a 10kg sack of rice i don't want and no way to buy another sack as i don't trust amazon with it now. How annoying.
Could you donate it to a homeless shelter ? I'm sure they would appreciate it.
I recently queued from 3.45am outside an Aldi store in order to win a 39inch TV (which I did since I was first there but only by 15 mins) at their grand opening. I was well wrapped up and prepared even though the temps dipped to below -5 :eek::eek: I had a reward and a warm home and bed to go home to and food. It really made me appreciate how lucky I was/am as I waited.0 -
I will donate/give to someone if it does turn out to be non organic. Won't be going in the bin so no worries there.0

Reminder for those keen on organic food you can put your points to EU before 10/04/13. If you do the questionnaire plese read carefully cos the questions can be misleading re standards.
