I can't fly, LIR, so it's always the train option. It makes every holiday much more expensive but it can become part of the holiday itself.
I haven't been to Italy for a number of years but we used to go Eurostar (1st class so we were fed) & then hop straight on the night train (in a double cabin) at Bercy.
Having eaten on Eurostar there was no need to go for the costly option of a meal in Paris or the slightly dubious restaurant car on the Bercy-Venice train. The night train replaces one night in a hotel.
On other occasions we've changed at Lille, spent a night there & then caught the TGV down to Monaco. Monaco is actually cheaper (& in my view far nicer) than Paris. From there you can train around the Riviera (we used to go on to Sta. Margherita Ligure or go up to Milan, the lakes, Venice or beyond.0 -
Right.
I have been through Results Chapter 1. Which is currently bigger than all of the other results chapters put together, but nevermind, hopefully not for long. I got more lazy towards the end of the chapter (in how it is written and how I have looked at it tonight), but I have made it to the end nevertheless.
I have made yet another list of what needs completing in this goddamn neverending chapter (guess where I usually get start and get stuck), but I think (hope) that there are only a couple of figures that need adding to/ making. Most of the text describing the figures is there, just need to make sure it makes some kind of sense and isn't too repetitive/ rambling, swap a couple of sections around. What I think needs covering in the intro and discussion for that chapter are present in bulletpoints, so hopefully just need to convert to paragraphs, crossreference and reference as required. Aim: 1st draft of Results chapter 1 complete by end of March (so Friday 29th as I am going away for Easter weekend).0 -

I want warm though...and private, (and probably rural) so it's train connect, train, hire car..
It's really too short a time to go for heat unless we fly somewhere. (I know I am not meant to fly but frankly, couldn't give tuppence ha'penny ATM. It's not quite Russian roulette if you minimise issues. Long travelling would be hard too, so I choose fly. If all I am going to do is lounge, sleep and swim and love dh then tbh, if I am drowsy and swollen it doesn't matter too much. If I am drowsy and sore while travelling and making train changes etc its probably harder).
Eta, I am still looking at other options too.0 -
Right.

You clever, clever woman.
Well done. You've impressed me a lot.0 -

It's really too short a time to go for heat unless we fly somewhere.Particularly if you want to go in the near future. Even the South of Europe has been having unseasonable weather.
I completely understand the need for sunshine, though. With 5 lousy summers I'm sure my Vitamin D levels are practically non-existent & the cold winters take their toll on bodies which, whether through age or illness, need a bit of warmth to really feel at their best.
Sadly, I can't see us getting away again this year either. Too many other commitments on both our time & our money. Hopefully, I'll make it up big style when we sell our place. Europe (I don't hanker to go further) won't know what's hit it0 -
Excellent, date pencilled in my diary.0

How about the ferry to Santander (almost a cruise?!) and then drive back with short driving stints each day and nights in nice Spannish and French hotels (this is probably a 7-10 day trip though not a weekend)I think....0 -

How infuriating. So sorry to hear about that. I agree with you that it's a big risk to try to buy in a hurry, so renting is probably better, and trying out a possible new area is probably the best way to make the most of it. Respect to you for wanting to do the decent thing and not be awkward to the LL.Right.

Far too tired to have any bright ideas, but do want to say that I hope you find just the right thing, and have a brilliant time when you go.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

It's usually more like something that we would do, certainly. But being freely naked and possibly noisey features quite highly on list of wants and neither boat nor hotel will offer that in fairness to other travellers!
We really need to relax, so driving etc needs to be minimal.
But you have just made me wonder if a friend of ours with a little yacht has a partner ATM. If so maybe we could compromise on the privacy with going somewhere with others who are going to be too busy to notice, and have somewhere to swim (with and without my new swimming costume) right there....hmm.0 -

Hi lir, try looking at the Eurostar to Avignon, then a car to the Ardeche. It is not far and can be very private. It is not at the sea but has lovely rivers. You can go wild swimming and fir can kayak. I used to go there to visit my pen friend and always went by train. It is a beautiful and very special place, quite unlike anything here. The scenery from the train to Avignon is quite beautiful too, so it isn't as if you are wasting your time, you are just sightseeing your way there. There are some lovely places around Avignon that you can laze in the sun and it tends to be quite warm from April as it's the south of France, even if not coastal. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.
