Got an email from landlady last Wednesday saying they had decided to take our flat off the market as they couldn't sell it. There was one final viewing on Wednesday lunch time.

Today got a call and the bloody viewing generated the first offer since May 2010 which they have accepted. Sodding sod. We have to be out by early June. This throws a spanner in the house buying works as will now be tied in to another rental contract for at least six months. OH is distraught.

The only silver lining is that she wants us out ASAP so will release us from the contract if we want to go earlier so we should be able to move immediately and start a 6 month AST somewhere else now rather than in June.

I thought you were still skiing?
    I think....

No, i though he was home having crashed his head. With a helmet on. He didn't want a broken brain and to sit in the bad spelling corner with me :D

    Good egg.

My suggestion would be to rent in one of the least desirable of the areas you are considering, whether its from length of commute or poshness only you know. That way the 'horror' or it is experienced and you know how you both feel about committing to it for the rest of your lives.

Tend to agree with this as you cannot change the situation so may be best to look on the bright side and think this is a golden opportunity to trial a desired location.

I wish. Only three days skiing, we flew out Wednesday night and back Saturday night- missed the rugby on Saturday though as we were en route to the airport which made up for it.

You could buy a house and be in it by June if something you saw was acceptable?

Otherwise, am sure you can get short term leases in London, cost a bit more but with flexibility.

That would be possible but we'd need to find somewhere immediately and would probably end up compromising too much and overpaying out of desperation. Think it is probably more sensible to rent.

@LIR - that is a good idea, although had been looking forward to the last few months of living central-ish and still being able to go out late. I expect that is the sensible thing to do in this situation though.

Actually, a good reason employers like those who have finished PhD's is the sheer grit and determination it requires. You are certainly a different person when you come out of the process.

I have plenty of other examples of situations where I can show I gritted my teeth and was determined :) I am hoping that I will have another one though.

Anyway, I have gathered my toys back into my pram :o, and after walking around yesterday with a big black cloud over me (and eating a very large packet of crisps in the evening), I have this evening:
    a) finally replied back to the graduate office at the Uni. Probably didn't need to, but at least I've confirmed I am still alive (and able to use a keyboard)
    b) picked up the bits I printed out a month ago with one hand and a 'red pen' (well, a blue biro) with the other.

Just for the record, I am very grateful for all the suggestions, and I know they were meant in the very best possible way.

Nikkster, sounds like important progress. No toys seen flying as far as I am concerned...just understandable frustration.

I am giving up looking for a holiday...do people really do this for fun? I did see a nice tower with a private pool in Italy, but was more than I want to spend and just not right.

Dh suggested various homes of family members...people who we can dog sit for, or make use of a room while they are away...but that's emphatically NOT what I want, particularly because if I am going to fly I will probably have to have that stupid spinal tap just before, so then flying and having to sit through a family meal where people talk that stuff then take ages to leave the next day kind of dampens the beginning of a romantic getaway IMO. I don't really want to see anyone we know, are related to and should know or really, anyone not expecting a tip or handing over keys.

So back to thinking about courses. Dh says aromatherapy massage is not floating his boat, but the massage one he likes the look of is not really doing it for me.

I have bought a really pretty swimming costume from tk max online though, so a holiday we could use it on sounds ok.

Maybe we should just use the holiday money for a hot tub to upgrade from the paddling pool or old slurry pond.

I still struggle to thin of Richmond as centralish.:o When I moved to NW3 I remember meeting a group of friends who were disbelieving I had moved 'all the way out there'. :D.

Try the less posh places then, if the more distant ones are not close enough in. Tbh, as you guys get to be with each other every night, it seems worth maximising that, so you can reasonably be home for kids baths in the future and stuff. Then the nice restaurants will be less accessible anyway, so you might as well be closer :D

Hi lir, what about the train options, are they no good? Perhaps the Eurostar to Bruges or Avignon, or Eurostar fast train combo to Strasbourg. Not too much train time and some lovely things to see and do at the other end. Or maybe the train hotel to Barcelona from Paris.
