Whatever happens, a few more months and you won't have to listen to me going on about it again! I do really appreciate your support, and it helps so much having somewhere to talk it through/ vent.

Sugarpie, we will listen to you forever and a day, and support you.

This thread is fantastic for support, because we can just purge our souls. I thought it would make it awkward when we all met, but it was fine. :D

    Pffft.

    Hopefully not.

BTw why did I say this about beds yesterday? DH went through the slats at the foot end of our bed earlier this afternoon. :(. We will probably have to get a solid base for it cut to size. Pfffft.

Today I noticed the shoes I was wearing for a while coordinate with the bedding we have on the bed too.

lir - you are spot on. I really should just suck it up. I really want to. But its like there is a big invisible wall in the way and I can't work out how to get round it. I'm not sure whether I have damaged the wall enough to get through, but the only way to find out is to fling myself at it again.

Hi Nikks. Do you know what the wall consists of? First step in bulldozing walls is discovering what they are made of. If you don't mind me saying, it sounds like you don't know. If you can work that bit out, you'll be on your way. Perhaps a couple of hours well spent would be tucking yourself away and answering that question.

ETA: I admire you, I wish I had the intelligence, guts, drive and determination to even start one.
Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

Yes, nikkster doesn't realise how super she is...which is part of her charm.

Fwiw, viva, I dunno about drive...you seem to have so many plates spinning I think time would be your only obstacle. You awe me.

Could you book a weeks leave, go to your parents and instruct them whatever you later say to the contrary they are to hassle you if you connect to the internet, go out or talk to anyone else and fail to produced 2000 words per day. Then sit down and just write whatever carp comes in to your head regardless of the quality which you will then find can be edited in to something passable fairly quickly even if it is not as good as your perfectionist streak would like to see.

This works for me although I don't have a perfectionist streak!

I tried isolating myself at my parents' for a few months last year! I wasn't even properly looking for jobs (just a 5 min look once a month-ish). I only applied for one job that I didn't think I would get in the last couple of weeks before I left London! The only thing I did whilst I was back there was one day a week volunteering in the local CAB doing some admin - and that was just so that I didn't lose the plot completely from not talking to anyone other than my parents (well, and preparation for the admin temping that I thought I would eventually end up doing).

I've also tried switching off the internet, but that doesn't work (a. I know it is just switched off and b. need it to check things). Starting out setting targets also hasn't worked - I fail and then give up completely (with a large serving of feeling guilty):(

Have been thinking that just writing whatever then worrying about editing it is the way forward. Will definitely give that a go. Once I am up and running I'm pretty sure that I will manage to be very focused, I just need to 'trick' myself into getting there rather than being too strict.

I wish I had had the intelligence not to start one! Or at least not to get into the ridiculous situation I am now in trying to finish up :) The wall is many things - it started off as a reluctance to prove what I don't know/ understand by committing it to paper (and that's before thinking about a viva), and has picked up having a lot of data to pull together, a feeling of nausea thinking about anything to do with the thesis and a bit of every time I make a re-start something crappy happening.

Well said lir (as per usual), viva you are pretty incredible - and your literature searches would be second to none :D

Using the bed as a trampoline is meant to stop when your age gets into double figures.......particularly wearing shoes.

Yes, I agree, that's a really excellent suggestion.

Maybe suggest going over Passover, then agreeing to go later will seem like a compromise. ;)

:rotfl:Thanks Nikks (and lir). My literature searches for my Masters, I was told, were the best in my year. Unfortunately it was all downhill from there. Of course writing a dissertation was much easier than it would be for a thesis. There were bits that were a walk in the park, others that were not so good. DH found the same with his PhD.

Can you talk to your supervisor about your concerns re proof?
Putting together a project plan which gives you signposting, deadlines and milestones for writing up might be a good idea too. It sounds like some structure might help. Don't worry about editing or good English, that can come later.
