Sympathies. Does she over analyse everything you say? I am suffering the second child doing a psychology degree and it is tiring.
Do you ever tell him? After all, it's something to think about...how he impacts on others and how his study can help that while he is helping ypu not hate she who is the subject of deleted posts and is not dirty.0 -

We do have our moments I must say, but Dads will usually turn a blind eye to keep the peace.
If I say the wrong thing in her eyes, I get the look.
Time will tell I hope.:(0 -

Your daughter is 11 years younger than me, as with some other NP's, and I think mine and Lydias are the youngest?!
michaels has younger kids than mine.
DS had his testing today for his learning difficulties. The testing person came to our house, and made him do all manner of different tests. It took ages, but I feel happy that she should now have a reasonably comprehensive picture of the many things he can do and the few he really can't. I discovered that his reading is quite a lot better than six months ago, but he is still getting completely stuck on longer words he doesn't know, and can't work them out if they're not immediately obvious. He struggled with some of the listening and speaking stuff too - separating words out into their constituent phonemes and putting phonemes together to make words. I think he did pretty well on the non-verbal IQ stuff, though, and to the extent that he could sound out the words, his comprehension of what a passage was about seemed to me to be good. There was a persistent problem of rushing things and answering before he'd thought properly, so I'll have to see what I can do with him about that! We now have to wait a couple of weeks for her to write it all up into a report.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

It amazes me how well small communities deal with stuff like this. There is hardly ever any major loss of life despite the huge property damage. If this storm had hit PNG or Indonesia I can't help but feel that the outcome would have been far worse in terms of loss of life. We are very lucky here in Australia and indeed in the UK. I think we don't realise just how precarious life is for most people in the world.
It feels the opposite of how we do stuff here. Both are relatively small towns: Maryborough is 21,500; Hervey Bay 76,500 (though very spread). Yet they have their own good health facilities, possibly beause of the being cut off. Here it would be centralise and specialise, there it is decentralise and cover. They also have a very pragmatic and broad approach to volunteers in the emergency service. I guess we do too, with volunteer firefighters and coastguards, but it does seem a lot broader there, out of necessity.
As I understand it both Maryborough and HB are not reachable at the moment - the Bruce Highway passes near Maryborough and that was also cut overnight. In Maryborough, the Mary River is 5m over its normal limit.
I don't know if this hit PNG too, but you're right it would be slammed. Using a different example, Chile isn't one of the richest nations in the world, but it has strong building codes that their government enforces. As a result, their buildings stand up incredibly well in an earthquake, whereas much smaller quakes decimate countries like Haiti.
I guess this goes to show that if you live in an inhospitable part of the world, you've got to hope that your country is wealthy enough and your government sufficiently non-corrupt that your infrastructure holds up.Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? I think it's that frontier attitude like in the US. Once you get out of the big cities (Brisbane, Perth, Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle and Melbourne) you can make an amazing life for yourself if you are self-sufficient enough. There's no point in relying on the Government to do something for you because they might not come and then you'd be in trouble!vivatifosi wrote: »As I understand it both Maryborough and HB are not reachable at the moment - the Bruce Highway passes near Maryborough and that was also cut overnight. Yes it was. Flash flooding I believe. I think the other main road in the area is also closed as there are some big potholes due to the road being washed away. Most rescues, as ever with floods, have resulted from people deliberately entering the water. One rescuer very nearly died as he was swept under a flooded bridge while saving a 14 year-old who wanted to play in the water. Idiot child.
This shows the river levels on the Mary River: http://www.bom.gov.au/qld/flood/mary.shtml
The Burnett River seems to be getting all the attention ATM but it looks like the Mary catchment has had a lot of water and that will all need to work its way through the river system as it has nowhere else to go. If you look at that map, the major flooding is up river right now but it won't stay there:vivatifosi wrote: »I don't know if this hit PNG too, but you're right it would be slammed. Yup. For all our complaints about how we can't get the walls apple-blossom white so had to settle for white apple-blossom or that they've changed the colours on the BBC website again, most of our gripes are trivial really no matter how pressing they may feel at the time.0 -

Very true.

They both (having both studied/ studying psychology) exchange looks.Do you ever tell him? After all, it's something to think about...how he impacts on others and how his study can help that while he is helping ypu not hate she who is the subject of deleted posts and is not dirty.
He is not so bad, and the critical stuff is reserved for me.
On the subject of the subject of deleted posts, OH going overseas today. He went to retrieve his foreign currency left over from previous trip from bedside table only to find a few dollar bills instead of what should have been a stack of about 50$.This was next to his passport, so it could have been worse.
We are now wondering if she will contact me on her return seeking more work, completely unaware that she has been rumbled.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Just to let you know, while you sleep quite probably vivatifosi, the ex-cyclone has now moved south to the Sunshine Coast. The sea is still very rough but the worst of the weather should be over for your family.
Clearly there is still plenty of scope for further flooding as the water comes down river over the next couple of days but the fact that there is no more coming out of the sky should help matters.0
