Nah, not really. Posted something that I thought I knew, then realised that if I was right, it was as a result of personal connections and that it isn't fair to suggest something that may or may not be the case, based on what someone had told me rather than being common knowledge. For those who did see it, i still don't know whether it is true or not.

Why is it OK to leave an electric oven on, but not an electric hob?

Because it's easy for something to fall on or be placed on a hob and for it them to catch fire.

Originally, the advice was to put on a gas hob, but if you've electric hobs then use the oven. Anything falling onto either would result in fire.

In the end I put my oven on, but not before removing practically everything that had been left out in the kitchen and which could be considered combustible (teatowels etc, though I did stop at removing the blinds which have cords on). About 15 minutes later I switched the oven on, but only once I'd checked the fire extinguisher. It did work very well though.

In my kitchen, it is very easy to see whether the gas hob is on or not, and there is nothing that could possibly fall onto it - the only thing within a couple of yards that's at a higher level than the hob is the extractor. I don't think the hob lit with nothing on it is any more of a risk than the hob lit with a saucepan on it. When I want to use a cooking appliance to heat the kitchen I use the hob because it's gas and the oven is electric, and gas is cheaper. Also, the heat from the hob can convect directly round the room, whereas heat from the oven will take longer to get out.

In previous kitchens I've known electric hobs that looked all innocent and cold even when they were on. I would certainly not use one of those for heating the room up. If your kitchen design, hob type, vision or level of nervousness is different from mine, then adapt my suggestion accordingly.

Hope that clears up any confusion from my original suggestion.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Even I'm not that scared.... :)
Well, so long as I had built up confidence in the oven through usage over some months....

Did anybody else just watch the Grand Designs with the Irish bloke and the castle/folly he bought over 20 years ago for £117k?

Work in progress, with an initial 1.2million Euros promised, ground to a halt over credit crunch issues.

That sounds fabulous. Please report back and will you share the recipe please?

    It was good.

Here's the gist of the recipe (quantities for two)

Make mash from about a lb of potatoes (with butter and a splash of milk)

Then in an oven safe frying pan soften two leeks, then crumble in half a black pudding and fry for a couple of minutes. Remove contents to a bowl.

In that frying pan put half the mash, and press out to line the bottom and sides of the pan, then return the leek and black pudding mixture to the pan in this potato 'casing'. Add 1oz grated gruyere or compte and one oz crumbled blue cheese, then put the rest of the mash on the top to seal the cake, finally sprinkle 1 oz grated partisan/Granada on the top and stick into an oven at 190 centigrade til golden on top.

It was really nice comfort food. I made those quantities for three of us and served with veg. It's very filling and we haven't done much today. Io think it would very comfortably do four people with extra veg tbh. Similarly the chicken dish fro
M the book I did yesterday sad it was for four but we had it last night and for lunch, so that was for six. Dh and parent are both big eaters, and so normally I would cook a recipe for four expecting them to finish it.

It's purely because it's something I hadn't done before and the oven has a fan.

Next time I will be far more blase. Definitely a building confidence up thing. Hopefully I've spelt blase correctly. I definitely don't want to be blaze!
