Quite a few of the 'prettiest' villages have similar restrictions. I have a restriction as to what colour some of my things, like guttering can be (but argued it and won) because of listing.

It's one of the many things that makes that picture postcard Cotswold village type life suffocating to me, I do not want barbie pink front door, but I want to know I can have it if I choose to.

The Cotswold villages are indeed very beautifull and contain a history of our achitectural past in many forms. Also one city that I like very much is Bath and its architecture. You may remember this occasion, possibly, of a very brave Lady who took the Council to the highest Court in the land with her case, it was mainly her wealth I believe that achieved her wish. Here is a nice story...

The Royal Crescent is a street of 30 terraced houses laid out in a sweeping crescent in the city of Bath, England. Designed by the architect John Wood the Younger and built between 1767 and 1774, it is among the greatest examples of Georgian architecture to be found in the United Kingdom and is a Grade I listed building. Although some changes have been made to the various interiors over the years, the Georgian stone façade remains much as it was when it was first built.

Many notable people have either lived or stayed in the Royal Crescent since it was first built over 250 years ago, and some are commemorated on special plaques attached to the relevant buildings.

The Royal Crescent now includes a hotel and a Georgian house museum, while some of the houses have been converted into flats and offices. It is a popular location for the makers of films and television programmes, and a major tourist attraction in its own right.

In the 1970s the resident of No 22, Miss Wellesley-Colley, painted her front door yellow instead of the traditional white. Bath City Council issued a notice insisting it should be repainted. A court case ensued which resulted in the Secretary of State for theEnvironment declaring that the door could remain yellow

I wonder whether this Lady was related to the 1st Duke of Wellington Arthur Wellesley...

And it's still yellow - and the current owners (been there 20 years) are about to repaint it yellow: http://virtualmuseumofbath.com/2012/08/17/

In unposh places, like where I live, we have the BBC knocking on doors asking people to move things out of window view because it is spoiling the continuety of Eastenders.

Not me personally, but a friend has had them knocking at the door when they are filming by flood light late at night, asking for her to open her bedroom curtains!

I hope they pay well! If not I'd be very quick to tell them where to go, in not very NP language at all:o.

You lot have been busy today - anyone would think it wasn't nice out but the DDs have spent 3 hours playing in the garden in the snow.

Thanks for your concerns for DS - we did take him to the docs today as he is a rather pale beetroot colour over most of his body and remaining hot (and snotty). doctor said the colour, cold and vomiting are probably all the same virus and how were his stools and has the cough started yet so something to look-forward to their. He also said the allergic reaction yesterday is also almost certainly at effect of the virus which is interesting.

Driving to the out of hours doc place was 'fun' as although the snow is not deep the roads are mostly very slippery. I checked the stopping distance from less than 10mph and reckon it was more than 30m! I would say the weather was having a major economic impact as the roads were completely dead as were the market yesterday (half the stalls were empty) and the supermarket late afternoon - lots of parking near the door, Viva will know how rare that is.

In our old Victorian house we didn't want to put in ugly double glazing but found the tape and hair-dryer on film completely unobtrusive and very effective.

Viva you should look in to getting an air source heat pump heating system, there are grants for installation and some sort of subsidy for use.

We have relatives in Florida - some live in a community where there are the restrictions, others live in nearby but in streets where anything goes. Americans tend to treat their houses as 'throw-away' so the affluent like to buy new and trade up to new again once they are no longer new; in the unrestrcted streets the neighbourhoods have gone down hill with overgrown yards, dilapdated houses, cars on bricks, fenced yards with noisey dogs etc. The restricted streets remain pristine (or be it in a Stepford Wives type of manner). I would really dislike the restrictions but I can see that they serve a purpose.
    I think....

New post so people don't miss it - AMEX foursquare are now doing £15 back if you spend £50 at Shell petrol

Also re Hamish's post on other threads. The vast majority either seem to be started by politico hacks of one persuasion and contributed to by those of the other or even where threads do start discussing something interesting they soon become sidetracked in to the same. I then post something factual and it gets ignored as the slanging match continues.
    I think....

I'm near a Shelll now.... I have some Shell card I've not investigated/registered yet. Filled it up/used it twice to date - but with it being winter and work being 2 miles away - I am hoping the tankful I got on 2 January will last me until at least the start (if not the end) of March!

    :)

I've no AMEX as that's a POSH ALERT!!
    :)

Edit: Just trying to register my shell card online (50 extra points) but they want me to choose the Reward Type - and I've no idea which'd be best. It'd be either money off fuel , gift card or waitrose... got to find the page that explains to do the maths.

Edit 2: Each complete fill up is worth 30 points, 500 points = £2.50 off vouchers. So, averaging 30 points/month, looks like it'll take nearly 2 years to get £2.50 off :)

Yet again.... showing why I don't usually bother with cards.

Edit 3: Oh well, at least the card is a "free ice scraper".

    Thanks guys.

It's not a dig at anyone in particular, more a sense of frustration that we have so many good posters on this thread that rarely if ever post on the main board any more.

Hamish, old lad, I'm afraid you've become part of the problem.

You are obviously an extremely intelligent and articulate person. You can also be extremely rude and abrasive. It's not just you, there are plenty of others as well, who all seem to follow their own Agenda. When we started debating on the House buying forum (prior to this board) discussion was always handled with dignity and good humour, now it's just descended to a out and out bun fight. It's no wonder many of us rarely post there these days.

It's gonna be discussed in the np thread, but can we keep it not personal?

If anyone has any ideas for retaining heat rather than warming up - as that's where in reality my options will come from - please let me know...

A costly option on the generating and retaining criteria (but worth it if this is your forever home( - PN get your Posh Alert out of the way now - Viva could you install an Aga or Rayburn/Stanley type cooker? The Rayburn/Stanley would also run your heating

We do not have a radiator in tne kitchen, windows are only single glazed and ours is quite toasty.
