I used to smoke two packs per day when I was on the road until one day I worked out what it was costing me which was denying the family something like £3,600 per year. That was enough to give me an incentive to quit, hard at first but I scucceeded in the end and feel so much better now, that was around ten years ago.

I must have tried a hundred times to give up and probably many more between the ages of 19 and 35ish before I succeeded.

I am very against the extreme measures taken against smokers. Surely adults can take their own informed decision. I am sure there are many other more risky behaviours that are not currently proscribed. Who wants to live in a world where others decide every risk we take, often determined by emotion rather than statistics?

I think the argument goes that smoking is highly addictive (see above) and so people aren't free to make their own choices as they are normally.

I don't really like this victimisation of smokers. If you can ban this then what next? Limiting what you can eat perhaps or banning sugary drinks.

Re snow... Saw this snow sculpture a local artist in Tring has built. I really like it:

    Beats a snowman.

The scene: 2 snowmen in a field.

One says to the other, "Can you smell carrots?"

Booze makes sense... when you add up the total cost in terms of health, police, social problems, vandalism ... etc etc.

It's one of the major factors in turning a pleasant area into vomit-soaked no-go area.

The trouble with that is politicians drink but they don't smoke. I think that's how this smoker thing has been seen as acceptable.
  • The persecution of smokers is daft.

And economically self defeating as well.

I have just been looking out of the window. There has been no more snow today, but yesterday's snow is still lying in most places. I imagine the main roads are clear by now. However, my street has been churned up just enough, and has now refrozen. It looks like an ice rink now, especially on the corner where the street light shines on it.

My cold is getting worse again, and DD is not well either, so I don't think we'll be going to church tomorrow, but I am really not looking forward to Monday morning if the street is still in the same condition then as it is now.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

  • The board is getting a bit mental again.

    Which reminds me.
