    Two things:

1] That's how they behave on the telly; remember that bloke about the financial meltdown screaming "It's Armageddon out there!!!"? They're a shouty bunch those Americans.

2] It's a bit rich anybody turning up in another person's country telling them how to do stuff when it's 'civilised' societies (so I am not referring to dictators being told to stop). None of Piers' business really. He's not even important over there, just a wannabe trying to get noticed I guess.

Why don't you remove the battery and then plug the laptop into the mains?

Mine is like that, it conked after about a year, I think it was because I used it plugged in to often icon9.gifUsing it on the lead seems to make it overheat easily, is that the same with yours? I think I will have to buy a new one (battery or laptop).
Overheat: Yeah, probably. I've just been running it for about 16 hours/day every day plugged in. Not used it on battery more than one hour in the past year probably.

It does get very hot even though I try to keep it well vented etc.

How do you evacuate if you didn't expect it as it all changed while you were sleeping.... at 3am, who would tell you to wake up and get out?

He wasn't telling them he was just voicing an opinion, an opinion that I would be surprised if it wasn't supported by the vast majority of the population.
'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher

But I don't think the majority of the US population do support gun control. michaels is right that they have a completely different cultural take on guns. I was reading just a few days ago about some Aussie ex-PM speaking to some gathering of people in Texas, not a gun group or anything, just business people or something. He was asked what his proudest achievements as PM were, and he listed several things that they all clapped about, and then he said he'd introduced much tougher gun control and brought the gun-crime rate way down as a result, and they all just gasped and looked shocked at such a dreadful infringement of civil liberties. Sorry - I'm too lazy to track down the article, but I'm sure somebody can find it.

Just visited the Telegraph website for my daily fix of Matt cartoon. (I get my news from a selection of websites to get a balance of views, but Matt is definitely my fave cartoon.) Annoyed to see yet another sloppily inaccurate headline in two days. Yesterday all the other papers & BBC etc were correctly reporting Coalition plans for tax cuts for "working parents" and the Telegraph went on and on about "working mothers" and said "all working women will get..." in a way that erroneously implied completely illegal sex discrimination. Today they have an article about rises in council tax, saying that homeowners will be hit - as though renters don't have to pay CT. Must not let myself get irritated.

Must cook supper before it gets too late and then help with maths homework. The cleaner has been today and the place is all pristine, and DD has decided she wants to make one of these, so I am going to fight a probably losing battle against the spread of little bits of shredded carrier bag all over the house.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

The carrier bag idea sounds incredibly fiddly. I hope it works out, and you don't have to buy a new iron!
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I think for some Americans gun control is a similar issue to the NHS for some Brits. It's a totemic issue - the second amendment is something that they see as part of their national identity and for an outsider looking in they appear to be acting illogically (in the same way that people who hold the NHS up as a sacred cow which should never be reformed probably look like loonies to those looking in, and free healthcare has only been ingrained into our national psyche for 60 odd years - the right to bear arms has been with the US since they became an independent nation).

I doubt he is the stupidest supporter but he is the guy that created the petition. I think showing the US people the type of people who have a legal (presumably) arsenal of 50 weapons must be quite a sobering thought for the vast majority of the US population and I am fairly sure we will be seeing some sort of legislation very soon.

I think any American with a brain is quite aware that there are lunatics with guns in America - they have probably noticed from all the shootings. I doubt they need Piers Morgan to educate them.

I reckon they probably will re-ban assault weapons - think they were banned by federal law up until 2004 or something like that and they only got unbanned because the existing ban lapsed, not because try we're positively legalised, so probably the easiest thing to ban without creating a huge row - throws a bone to the anti gun lobby without royally f-Ing off the NRA.
