I have never seen an Australian person drink Fosters except when it was the only beer on sale at The Oval in Kennington....

What are the popular beer brands in Australia then? I think I've only drank Fosters and Castlemaine (XXX?) and wasn't impressed by both.

(I do like to have an occasional browse in the supermarkets' foreign beer shelves...my current favourite is Zywiec (Polish))

Belgian beer all the way for me :)

Try Leffe or Hoegaarden. Leffe Brun is waiting for me at home in the fridge right now. I can hear it calling softly over the ether :)

Yep, DW got us to pay extra for this self cleaning, heat retaining glass. I don't think she knew what we were paying extra for, but it sounded the part.

It's okay, but I don't think it will overcome the bowel movements of a determined pigeon :)

Oh dear, I hope it will here. Our bathroom window is awkward to clean (unless like dh you climb out of it) so I was going to ask listed buildings if just in that window, we might have self cleaning glass.

Dunno about the other bits but in the East it works like this:

    NSW: Tooheys
    VIC: VB
    QLD: XXXX

In addition, in Sydney at least, we have James Boags which is slightly hoppier and then there are a load of craft beers and I've tried a couple of those too.

The trouble is, Aussies serve their beer at about 1.5C which means that your not going to get anything much in the way of volitile flavours.

The way to take Aus is that things are better for the masses but you miss out on the top end.

they have xxxx, but it's usually xxxx gold (a horrible low carb beer which gives you terrible hangovers and makes you put weight on in a counter-intuitive way). there is a massive xxxx brewery which you drive past on the way into brisbane from OH parents' house. i've never seen fosters advertised or sold in australia.

the main brands i can remember are VB (horrid), Carlton (tastes like Carling, but weaker), Hahn (again most of their beers are low carb things and horrid), Crown (super chav) and Tooheys (some of which is ok). My favourite australian beer is an IPA called little creatures, but I have never seen it on sale in australia.

it's all a bit crap in aus - everything is low-carb and also there is a massive drive to lower the alcohol percentage, especially at sports grounds. if you go and watch cricket there, they sell light beer (2% alcohol) and mid-strength (3%), and that's it. you can get cider at the MCG which is a bit stronger, but they stop selling it at 4pm.

so basically they want you to pay $10 (£6.50) for 2/3 of a pint of beer, but they don't want you to get drunk. what's the point of that. (i think they might have had to do this because they had some riots at cricket matches or something when you used to be able to take a slab (24 bottles) in with you).

even lords lets you get ratted (in fact the oval seems stricter to me, as they will let you stroll into lords carrying a bottle of champagne, and then they will serve you until you fall down the steps in the stand and can't get back to the bar).

    Yes....(I'm Belgian btw)
Garage is still nicely stocked with blonde Leffe, Orval, blue and red Chimay, Duvel, Palm, Grimbergen, Westmalle and plain Jupiler lager :D

I just like to try something foreign from time to time. Asahi (japanese) is another nice one.
