    Fortunately we are all very liberal on this thread and don't mind if you or PN or whoever would rather have a DH, DW or small fluffy dog.

    Unfortunately the DW seems to cost a lot more than she makes via putting all the savings in her name and using her credit searches for extra stoozing type opportuities.

    Well I've kind of been put off blokes, so perhaps the small fluffy dog option is the best one :rotfl:

    And finally, mainly nikkster and misskool I guess....

    On behalf of friend....

    Returning to work after long absence and portfolio career (patchy). Favourite jobs have been lab based science work....some petrochemicals for example, where did really well. No degree, looking for low level lab work job (as opposed to research for which has no educative preparation).

    What hope and what next? Quite fancies bio lab work.

    What sort of low level lab work? Might be able to try work as a schools lab technician where you prep stuff GCSE/A-level labs? Also might try to work towards a BTEC/HND or similar and that will help moving along.

    Big problem with universities now is that there are many with degrees and Master's looking for work experience so they will take all the jobs going.

    Can help with CV if you want me to cast an eye on it?

    House looks stunning btw

    Smart casual is rubbish if you're in professional services because you still have to wear a suit for external meetings, so you still need at least 2 suits, they just wear out a bit slower. So all it means is you need a whole new wardrobe to go alongside your normal work clothes.

    All I do in that sort of environment is take my tie and jacket off. Job done!

    :D I can wear what I want to work. Normal day is jeans and T-shirt. If I'm teaching, I wear something a bit smarter but not all that bothered.

    I am definitely going to suggest she take you up on the offer to look at her cv.

    It will take her a while to organise.....in the middle of nasty divorce.

    I think she is open to what sort of lab work.

    Dress code fairly casual: a shirt with a collar, trousers not jeans, shoes not trainers.;)

    Lab coat sometimes.

    That is very impressive. Miss S tells me she will start saving when she has finished paying for her MA. That will be from February then.;)

    Its not been a constant thing, but that was when I started earning (weekends and holidays) and I used to save the vast majority of my earnings. I also used to help my little bro with his weekly paper round when he couldn't be bothered to do it and that money went into my 'coppers and 5p' account (which I still add to when I have a full coin bag. even though the cashier is probably laughing at me).

    I've definitely gone through less MSE phases (such as when I was an undergrad - I dread to think how much I spent on going out, but it was too much), but I've never blown all of my savings. And even when I haven't had much coming in, I get the same thrill from seeing my savings creep up bit by bit as when I am able to put a bit more aside.

    I'm sure many people would have a lot more saved up over the same time period, but I'm also aware that many, many people don't. I lived with someone who pretty much had minus money for most of the time we were together :eek: (and not because they were splashing out on me whilst I was being Scrooge!)

    Black plain or blue pin striped suit;
    White or light blue shirt;
    Cuff links about half the time;
    Nice jolly tie for client meetings, interviews and when I feel like looking smart. Never novelty, always silk, normally woven;
    Black shoes;
    Black cotton socks;
    [STRIKE]wife's thong and stockings[/STRIKE]
    Occasionally a buttonhole on my birthday

    I ignore smart casual. It stops me going to interviews and I'd rather be the smartest than the scruffiest bloke in the room.

    I am now 'smart casual' (well not right now - I am wearing a very tatty hoodie, tesco value joggers, a free t-shirt with holey armpits and some slipper socks - mainly because others wear shoes in the kitchen and I don't want to wear my socks outside. And I wonder why I am single :cool:). There seems to be a range of interpretations to this, but I am trying to be slightly smarter than casual. It is a challenge having to make any kind of effort as I was very used to rolling out of bed and covering yesterdays clothes with a labcoat.

    I treated myself to some trousers from that reknowned design house 'Tu', and I am trying to cycle my handful of tops so I don't wear the same top 2 days. I am gradually trying to expand my wardrobe, but paying full price for things disagrees with me and I am in perpetual hope that I will manage to shift some weight (or at least shrink a bit).

    But I've heard of plenty of rejected applications as too highly qualified (and so not likely to stick around longer than it takes for something better to come along). Personally, I wouldn't let it put me off applying (with a back up plan such as what you suggest).
