What fits does depend on the industry and culture.

In the days where some parents wanted Consultants to look posh, a super paediatrician I knew used to carry a tie in his pocket and put it on when he thought a set of parents expected it. He wanted to meet their expectations and build rapport. His clinical judgement was not improved or otherwise by his neck wear.

Usually it is bow ties or no ties and bare below the elbows these days.

The hair cuts and the shirts are the give away details these days. Oh and the watches.

Well I had interview #2 today and went in with all your kind words ringing in my ears.

I thought I did pretty well, not as well as yesterday but pretty well. Almost certain that I'm on a short list of 1 or 2. The interviewer had a great poker face, I'd hate to negotiate against him.

He did have a 'show' of sorts but I'm not sure what it meant which is very aggravating.

I find out tomorrow. I'm confident but not certain about it.

I have to say if I were in a hospital and the consultant was bare below the elbows I would find it slightly off-putting

I and several colleagues tend to wear the 10 quid casio digital watches to work - do the job and don't suggest to one's not consultant colleagues that one might be earning a lot more than they do for doing a similar job.
    I think....

Last time we visited hospital the specialist said that they were having to change the dress code due to MRSA, so short sleeved shirts and fewer ties were becoming the norm.

This almost made me spit out my cereal in laughter.

A certain consultant I knew definitely gave away a lot. Bearing in my style of choice is verging on a la tramp, they would often turn up with very unwashed looking hair styled like they had just emerged backwards from a hegde. One particularly memorable day they turned up in a casual checked shirt (no problem there) - with a tie (Oxbridge). Just to add that certain something, the top two buttons of the shirt were undone (underneath the tie).

That still gets talked about

P.s. Don't think the watch was offensive, but it certainly wasn't enough to pull that outfit back from the brink.

Yep, bare below the elbows means.....I wash, properly, regularly, understanding that I can carry germs despite being a Consultant.

LIR - the kitchen looks fab to me. I like free standing.

The gothic looking dresser - what will you do with that?

I prefer fitted thaty looks free standing...I am too messy for free standing, food goes down gaps. :o. Dirt accumulates.

The gothic looking dresser is an alter. :D. It's going to serve as half a kitchen island in this longer term temporay kitchen. Later I hope it will fit upstairs in our bathroom as a 'unit' to take two sinks, and the arches will be doors to our bathroom storage....we will put one shelf in.

There is nothing you can do about it now so lets hope it comes off.

What was the 'show' and the context?

A 'show' is what happens when people are thinking something significant. It's a poker term but you can apply it to any meaningful interaction.

To give you an example, get together with someone that you know reasonably well and then start asking them some simple questions about the past and the future, e.g. where did you go to school, what's for dinner tonight. After a short time you should start to notice that when they are thinking of the past their eyes move one way (probably up and to your right) and when they are thinking of the future their eyes move a different way (probably up and the opposite of before). That is a 'show'.

This comes from NLP which is pretty much entirely discredited but which does contain little helpful things IMHO. Be warned that most of it is pure quackery and don't be seduced by the few people that believe in it still and their magic tricks.

Yup, I am completely relaxed about the job. If I get it then great, if I don't then I am working in a nice company with a decent bunch of people.

Nothing can possibly go wrong now.
