It's fair enough, but there's a million people out there quoting random factoids about how much "water" we need to consume.

I don't drink a drop, and haven't in years. Drink squash, tea, coffee, soups, add milk to porridge, etc. and stay hydrated no problem. When I go to soft water areas and see shelves stacked with bottled water indistinguishable from what comes out of the tap, I just have to shake my head.

Mind you i once taught someone with kidney failure who couldn't drink more than a few mls at a time. Basically could only drink as fast as she perspired, and couldn't eat anything like salty or spicy food in case it made her thirsty. Should count my blessings. :o

You might be fine, but who knows if you might feel better if you drank a litre a day every day.

    Or just looked better. :D

It's like when people say 'it never done me no harm' but who knows?

It might have done you silent harm, or you might be healthier as a result of bucking a trend that impairs millions.

My family have always been big drinkers, but it's mainly distilled, or at the very least corked. :D

Question for PN and those with ASD kids:

If there's a kid in the class with an ASD (or whose mother thinks he's got an ASD but hasn't got an official diagnosis yet) should I try to explain to DS what that is?

For example, "You know how your brain makes reading and spelling harder for you than for other people? Well, some people have brains that make reading social cues and understanding social norms harder for them than for other people. [Insert examples] That kind of thing is difficult for X. So try to be understanding when he doesn't behave well. I don't mean that it's OK for him to be rude, but just that he's probably not being bad or rude on purpose. I know you don't like it when he swears at you, but you can't assume that he knows that you don't like it, because he may not realise that unless you tell him."
[Please don't quote this paragraph because I'll probably delete it later. You can quote the rest though. Thanks.]

Or should I leave well alone?

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I think you should too Lydia.

    For more than one reason.

    1. Because of the situation

    2. Because it pays to look for reasons rather than jump to bad opinion in life with people anyway

    3. Because its good for kids who have things to deal with in life to learn ways in which other kids kids have what PN might call 'speshulness' and different obstacles to overcome.

After I came to London, I got a filter jug, but learned that if you don't change the filter you get a biofilm of bacteria inside that starts to add to any further water you put through later.

Cut one open once and never again. I'd only use one if filters were really cheap. Feel bottled water's a scam in a developed country.

OK but the filter on the fridge claims it needs changing after 6 months, no measurement of volume. Now given that we don't use it that much it should still be working well after that time and given it only has fresh tap water running through it, it shouldn't be contaminated.

I tried the "be nice its not his fault" when my youngest had one in his class. His response was to ask whether that makes it OK for him to push people and thump them? General feeling was that he was a bully and his parents were using any excuse not to deal with him. AIUI even if the cause is ASD the behaviour needs dealing with. Of course the methods of dealing with it may be different and the it may take longer to change behaviour patterns, but other kids have a right not to be bullied.

That sounds harsh and its not meant to be, but when a 6 year old was physically attacking your child and it wasn't being dealt with, it was frustrating.

Lydia, yes you should, but with one proviso. Has the mum explained to the child that they have ASD? It would be awful for your kids if they tried to sympathise and talk about it, as children do, only to find out the child hadn't been informed. I've met a few parents that talk about their children and their problems but the children don't seem to be aware, which is why I thought I'd mention it.

Confession time. I could have voted in the police election thingy. I didn't know, saw no publicity about it, must have got voting cards but can't remember, so no candidates, received no literature. Woosh. It passed me by.
