When I was a child we used to buy the polystyrene balls...

That remind me when I was a child, we had to bring to school hollow eggshell (when you make to holes on opposite sites and kind of blow the egg out, egg you usually use for some cooking) and we decorated it at craft classes. Really money saving tip J. Now you don’t have to trouble yourself with empting the egg, you could buy polystyrene balls. On the other hand as a child I really appreciate the idea of making staff from total easily available materials.

can't edit the post above to include details???

anyway, I think they would be quite speedy to make, if you didn't like the look of the wire ones, the pipecleaner ones would be simple to do

I'm going to attempt to make one of these over the next few weeks.

I saw the idea last year, and managed to pick up 2 boxes of 50 baubles in the 75% off sale in Wilkinson in January for £4.00, so very MSE and hopefully it will last years.

I'd also like to try to make this as well, but need to source a cheapish shadow box, and some bells at a reasonable price.
2016 is the year I am going to find time for me, and cherish the time I spend with my friends and family.
It is also time to save - Aim £4,000 - So far this year - £230/£4,000
  • Ikea do 25cm box frames for around £9. I usually pick up a couple when I'm there as they're lovely for just that kind of thing- I made a button heart picture for my mum's birthday and will be making a cotton reel one soon and may just stretch to a jungle bell Christmas frame! Thanks for the inspiration :D

    .

Yes, it should do, I've made a few of these & I can't emphasize enough, how important it is to make sure you glue the tops onto the baubles before you start ;).
I used about 85-90 for each one. threading them onto the hangers & then hot-glued some smaller baubles in place when I'd finished my circle.

Last year, when I got the wreaths out of storage, I discovered that some of the glued smaller baubles had fallen off but I just re-glued them back on :)

I've just had a look at one in the loft & some baubles have fallen off again, perhaps because of the range of temperatures up there. Anyway, they'll just be glued again :D

LOL yep definitely glue the tops on... I made one last year and thought "PAH! What nonsense... " DOH - I'm going to make another this year and I can promise you it'll have the tops glued on first (hot glue gun is the best...) :) The baubles will ping off if you don't glue them and trying to squeeze them back on in a tight space that probably isn't actually big enough is just going to ping one off somewhere else LOL

  • Last year I made a few simple pom-poms and hung them from the tree. Also a rag wreath is easy to make - you just need the metal circle 'base' and some 1"x5" strips of fabric in whatever colours you like, and just knot them all on - looks very effective :)
