I don't expect a handshake, just the change dropped into my open palm. Like I'd do for them. You know, courtesy...

OP was specifically complaining about it being dropped. looks like he/she wants phyical contact with the assistant, as even an inch drop is far too much for their sensibilities.

I thought it was just me. I have very bad hand eczema and find that a lot of people throw my change at me or place it on the counter coz there frightened to death they'll catch something.

I hate it when cashiers put money on the counter especially when I'm already holding my hand out.

I also hate it when they put a note on my hand and then place the coins on top of it. It's very awkward to put the money in my wallet if it's placed like that.

I've had this feeling of deja vu before :D
I need to think of something new here...
  • If viruses are the concern, there's already goodness-knows-what on the money anyway and both people in the situation handle money twice if change is involved. Also anything nasty on each party's hands gets transferred to the money before it's given/received anyway so I can't see why touching hands is any worse.

I leave shops if they do that twice, or sometimes if they do it only once. I'm perfectly capable of browsing and asking for help all by myself. :)

Which is my argument when I'm told I don't engage with customers enough at times (I work in retail). I know myself that when I'm shopping, I don't want some random member of staff interrupting me and going "hi! Are you alright/is everything okay?", if everything isn't okay, I'll come to you.

I just get on with my job, if I see something actually struggling, then of course I'll ask if they need help reaching something, or do they want me to get a basket etc.

As I say, the reason the staff do it is probably because they're told to do so. Something to do with customer service..seems illogical to me but oh well.

maybe its just me but i find a lot of shop assistants now wont physically put your change in your hand but want to literally drop it in case they touch you and get lurgy

They can always blow on their hands after - like some do
  • Easy solution, do what I do.
Place the receipt on the customer's hand, and then place the change on top.

Works for me serving 100+ customers a day!

I also had one of the aforementioned customers that think it's funny to literally throw money at you and then laugh - I made them pick it up before I'd complete the transaction, moved my chair to let them under the till. They won't do that again!

i am a checkout girl and very proud of it.

i ensure that every customer who goes through my till gets a smiley greeting. help with packing if required and im more than happy to hand them their change directly into their hand.

a cheery goodbye is all part of the service.

if you cant do it properly change jobs - simples xx

I'm with you on this.. I worked in retail for many years an always took the time to serve customers with a smile and handed their change back to them when appropriate. Some people are just in the wrong job.

    Too true.

I always make a point of being very polite to shop assistants (and everyone else for that matter) and ensure I say thank you and goodbye.

It's quite disheartening when you are greeted with a blank stare from some hatchet faced harridan.

Although, sometimes I think it's just shyness as on occasion, when I have persevered (in shops I revisit), they do eventually thaw a little.
