On a par with customers then

But the customers are customers, not people employed to enact customer service. And don't forget - 'the customer is always right'.

ive had customers throw money across the counter at me, sometimes making a point of making sure it falls on the floor so they get some point of watching me pick it up but i always put change in the customers hand, i may only be a sales assistant but thats my choice, as a person you are letting yourself down

What I get fed up with when buying clothes is "Are you alright?" On friday I had one assistant come up to me four times "Are you alright?" - I was only in their 5 minutes! Would have been in there even longer if she'd left me alone!0

You must be a minority of hygiene-conscious retail workers.
It's usually them that lick their fingers and put it all over people's shopping.
But that's OK.
I've also experienced s.a.'s doing what the OP is talking about and it does appear extremely rude.
Fine, you don't have to grasp or stroke (!) someone's hand whilst giving them change but to basically drop or throw it into someone's hand in an oviously purposeful way, is just downright rude.
If someone is so extremely worried about hand to hand contact then they shouldn't be working with money/customers.
Sensible thing would be to just give people their change in whatever way is best to place it in the hand securely, without ado, keep yer fingers away from yer gob throughout the day and wash your hands thoroughly before eating/at end of day. Handgel if someone has been OTT smelly or something.
Simples.
Retail/service staff should surely be pleasant, friendly and helpful in manner, not surly or giving off a vibe of 'I can't be @-rsed' or 'ugh don't touch me you minger' (like so many of them are/do these days).
I do agree with you, it is rude to drop or throw change at people in an obviously purposeful way. There are ways and means of giving change without touching the customer that doesn't involve doing it in this manner. It's really unfortunate that clearly a lot of retail staff can't seem to manage the art of subtlety, and to do it without the miserable attitude!
Is my post really that funny though? Just because I worked in retail didn't mean I wanted to touch every stranger I met, and I'm sure they felt the same way too! Most of what I said is just common sense, surely?
Reading back though it's clear I misunderstood the first post. What the OP meant is that he doesn't want his change thrown at him, which is completely understandable. That is rude.0 -

I leave shops if they do that twice, or sometimes if they do it only once. I'm perfectly capable of browsing and asking for help all by myself.

- WHY??!! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
How is the OP lettings themselves down 'as a person'?
If you're a good shop assistant then why take it so personally?

I hate touching people, and will do whatever I can to avoid it... the worst thing is when customers hold out their hand with change in it an expect me to fish the money out of their hand. It creeps me out.
We should go to the japanese way of doing things. Customer puts money in a tray. Sales assistant places the change in the tray. no physical contact is made.0 -
i am a checkout girl and very proud of it.
i ensure that every customer who goes through my till gets a smiley greeting. help with packing if required and im more than happy to hand them their change directly into their hand.
a cheery goodbye is all part of the service.
if you cant do it properly change jobs - simples xx0 -
I've noticed it at times. It tends to result in me holding up the queue as I fumble to pick them up (I'm a tad clumsy and not always good at picking up little things). Doesn't seem polite.
I don't expect a handshake, just the change dropped into my open palm. Like I'd do for them. You know, courtesy...0 -
