Preparing for winter IV

When I'm in the house by myself I tuck a fleecy blanket around my body (like a towel getting out of the bath). Leaving only my arms free to do my jobs. If the door is knocked I whip it off. A blanket lying round is normal in this house so no one knows I just looked like a complete fool
I cut a cross in the middle of a fleece blanket and often wear it as a poncho... keeps me lovely and warm, including my neck and shoulders, AND I can still get on with almost anything that I need to do! Whips off really quickly too when visitors turn up!

Aha! I'm going to do this with one of my old Irma fleeces. Thank you0 -
Have just seen this on the UK stormchasers forum..will update it when I can this week
In Summary this morning's output has come together in their prognosis for next week. The rest of this week will be rather cold but benign away from Northern and Eastern coastal counties where some wintry showers could occur. The South and west will be dry with frost and freezing fog for a while over the weekend. It now looks like an attack from the Atlantic is guaranteed next week as the cold feed is cut off with a spell of rain, preceded by snow on hills moving across from the west early next week. Thereafter it looks like the best hope for coldies is cold zonality and brief Northerlies on the back of passing depressions. It's also not good news for those wanting drier conditions in recently flooded areas as it looks like the return of some pretty wet weather for all again next week.

I feel for you having ot move out, i've been watching about the evacuations etc on the local news. Good news is that the river levels this end of town have dropped considerably so should happen your way too before long. Have the vans been breached?

Ditch the jeans! They're terrible for keeping warm and as others have said are cold and damp. Jogging bottoms really are the way to go!:)Confuzzled wrote: »the thing with slipper boots is don't wear them outside it trashes them very quickly. also, try not to wash them til the end of the season, they tend to go all wonky and not as fluffy or warm as before. that's with machine washing, handwashing might produce better results. i now have three pairs of them in various stages of 'decay'one pair i've had for 2 years now and despite being washed they are still warm enough for me most days.
:rotfl:Snap :rotfl:
I get mine at the market - usually around £6
I have a pair lying on their side (on purpose) on the kitchen floor (so I can see the soles). They have a hole in them(I wore them outside
) and I know they need to finally go to slipper heaven but as they're the oldest pair - they're the comfiest and I'm struggling to let them go!:rotfl:
No 2 pair are OK but not really worn in / moulded to my feet yet and No 3 pair are brand spanking new and I can hardly get them on  (I always forget how tight they are at the start and how much they stretch).Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

Yes it is slipper boots that I get every year. I am always given a pair for christmas from various supermarkets/cheap clothes shops but they are always trashed within a few months  (and not from wearing them outside - as I have a pair of garden clogs by the door to slip on to go to the bins etc). I never wash them either, gross as that may be, as I'm sure they'd just disintegrate! Being home all day with a small child (and so moving about constantly) obviously takes its toll on the cheap ones. My mum herself the same pair as she bought me, and she wears hers when home from work, but hers still look fine and mine look like a pathetic scruffy messthis year I bought a pair of soft leather boxing boots with rubber soles and fur lining....they are not coming off my feet till next April at this rate!!!!!
These sound lovely, might look into this idea, thanks! :TConfuzzled wrote: »it will always be cheaper to heat locally and easier on the family in general if you always feel the cold more than they do, it's awful sweating because someone else is just thawing out at that temp!
it'll be a good lesson too for your daughter to grow up seeing mum and dad wear layers and do sensible things to keep warm and have a lower house temp. she'll get used to it and just do it herself as that's the way it was always done, nothing weird about it, it'll be all those more wasteful people that are the weird ones
welcome to the thread, and congrats on taking your first steps towards overall preparedness...watch out though, it can get addictive
Completely agree with all of thisI didn't feel the cold at all until last year, after being pregnant and hot all the time. Now I've gone the other way
My husband, on the other hand, is constantly hot so our daughter will be growing up with the two extremes! (I am currently in several layers plus a scarf, under a fleece on the sofa, with my laptop keeping me warm. He is wearing nothing but a pair of shorts and is still warm, and he wears shorts every single day of the year including in snow )

I certainly will be now I've realised they really aren't warm at all! Hard though, as the majority of my wardrobe is pairs of jeans (and one pair of trousers, one pair of jogging bottoms, and a few pairs of leggings). I am very much a jeans and tshirt (long sleeved, in winter) girl but it's just not cutting it anymore!0 -
It's been miserable here last few days. Dd's dad has had his kitchen flooded and he can't dry out his shoes, doesnt have any heating.
Dd is worried we might get flooded but we wont. Maybe I shouldnt have showed her the photos of Wales, poor souls.
Anyhoo, hope everyone is coping well.

Hi everyone, hope you are all snug, warm and dry. I just want to know if you would like me to continue posting the weather predictions that I get from my friends? Are they helping anyone or would you rather I stop posting them? Thanks xxxx“The superior man, when resting in safety, does not forget that danger may come.
