    My power cut kit has:

    Torches and batteries
    Candles and lighter / matches
    Old style phone
    Wind up radio and lanterns
    List of emergency tel numbers
    Camping stove and gas
    Canned / easy cook food

The last two are because my oven and hob are both electric, so we couldn't even make a cup of tea! The canned food is really to conserve the gas. If I'm without power for a while, I don't want to waste too much gas so would rather have some things in that cook or reheat quickly.

I have gas central heating although the timer and possibly other controls are electric, and I have a gas fire in the living room for heat. And we are well insulated and have plenty of extra bedding.

    Afternoon all,

Very lucky here we have never had a power cut in nearly two years but know where the torch and candles are, just incase! Such a change in the weather and drop in temperature since I last posted!

    Winter prep to do list as follows (thanks to a few more tips from other posters);

    Car
    Buy hat

    Children
    Eldest DD needs boots

    Need to buy
Rug for playroom (£35 Ikea) (November)
Spreading a little Christmas joy all year round :santa2:
  • South West Cornwall here and had the dreaded powercut leaflet today!

Very grateful to have now moved in with my partner, he and the cat and the dog and his DS three nights a week keep the place very warm, as does the double glazing! Such a relief after two years in a 100yr old flat, wood sash (drafty) rotting framed windows and high ceilings!

Need to sort out the car boot (OH's car, I don't drive, yet, soon!!) as it's gained all kinds of tat, but also DSS's booster seat, which he's grown out of over the summer (he's just turned eight but he's hit 135cm and is all shoulders) and stock with emergency supplies.

Also need to get him new wellies/snow boots, we discovered his current pair are too small over half term, not worn them for months but we visited a farm/pumpkin patch for Halloween and they were ok for the day but are going to be too small for regular use soon.

He's gone from a size 12 when I met his Dad in October last year to needing size 3 trainers a couple of weeks ago....

Not meaning to sound patronizing but if you don't have kids how exciting to have a little un to potter about for and prep. It is heart warming to read how you are buzzing about looking after them both and I hope your partner realises what a lucky fella he is. xxxx:)

  • Kittie, I know you can't be specific and I appreciate the heads up, but are we thinking wet or cold or both? Whatever it is, I know I am always thankful for any advanced notice to do extra prep!

    Thanks Kittie ;).
Got Lovely Hubs to rearrange the shed this weekend. Bikes to the back, sledges and snow shovel now easily accessible. Log shed full and coal bunker topped up. We have saved up for another small stove to go in the dining room and can have it delivered but the fitters are really busy so don't know when we can have it put in yet.Chimney needs to be lined.
Just a reminder for people who feed the birds in their garden (we put out fatballs and seed as well as scraps) to get a little extra supply in perhaps?
If the weather is bad we are ready, if not, there's nothing bought which we wouldn't use anyway.
    Stay snug.x

Thanks Kittie, where were you planning on travelling to? ;)

I've got a week off (well, my 3 day week) so am going to be organising for the December festival. Usually I have a child or two with me so having some time off while they are in school / nursery is great. Have a list of things I want to get done, including finding new kiddie slippers!
