Preparing for winter IV

I'm in North Wales, and it was awful when I came home from work about 6pm. The wind was trying to move the car across the road, windscreen wipers on full pelt, and driving rain.
Went straight into my PJ's, and blitz'd the soup in the slow cooker to have with chunky bread.
OMG what will January bring then?
I can't say I'm cold, it's just the wind is awful, and the roads are getting water logged.
keep safe everyone:)

It's wild here in yorks. Brought the wreath in from front door as it looked like it might take flight...
Thanks for the heads up for jan, kittie. Much appreciated. I'll make sure we have plenty of supplies...Bossymoo

Note to self: Either loose some weight or buy another bigger waterproof coat

Been out to DD's Carol Concert and got soaked to the skin as I only have a 'shower proof' coat, then had to sit in a draughty church for 2 hours and despite coming home putting my pjs etc on and having a hot drink I cannot get warm. I was going to have an early night and snuggle down in my bed, but DD hasn't charged her phone so I need to stay up and do that so she has no excuse not to inform me of who/what/where/why tomorrow afternoon when she goes out with her friends. They finish half day, and I've said yes but I want her home by dark, which is only slightly earlier than she would normally be getting in
I've also got the advent candle lit so can't even have a snooze on the sofa, just burning number 9 off as I type...we're a bit behind this year
Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 -
I hate the gloom outside and had a candle on for most of the day yesterday. The weather was terrible during the evening, a real storm that was not forecast properly by the met office, in spite of their £40 million super computer. What is making it difficult for everyone is the sudden and dramatic shifts in the jetstream, which is why the weather suddenly changes so dramatically. This is down to magnetic relationships with the sun, which PC is accurately forecasting and he calls the R factor. 5 being the worst. The R factors apply to the whole earth and are not uk specific so it is a matter of applying the R factor to whatever the met o come up with ie if R is 5 then met o forecast needs to be multiplied several times
It is very hard for the human body, particularly the older and infirm, to cope with the need for quick adaptation to weather conditions and the gloom does not help as it depresses. It does help to have a constant temperature in the house and to use something like a biobulb where you are sitting, so that you get full spectrum light. Many devastating illness events take place some weeks after a sudden change in the weather, so it is best to be aware at the time0 -
I usually like winter kittie and am used to short days and bad weather - but as I get older I find I'm getting a wee bit down when we have long spells of gloom. Sunny freezing days are far nicer. I will google biobulbs ta.0

thanks for the explanation about the r factor
i have two biobulbs and i love mine, apparently mine are also ionisers, i believe that function helps get rid of odours and smoke not sure about the claims for possible germ fighting but you never know!

these are biobulbs, the ones I use in my house
http://www.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!/products/ecozone/biobulb-100-watt-(bayonet)/
grhh I`ll try another one

I do have ionisers in my house but they are specialist ones
one like this
http://www.djclarke.co.uk/
and I also have air filters( with built in ioniser) as dh has multiple allergies particularly to various chemicals and formaldehyde, which is low in this house as even the carpet upstairs is hemp and eco and the paints are auro paints. We bought the house even before he was tested, so the filters rarely trigger onto fast speed but they are a reassuring presence. Look up formaldehydes, it is a dreadful allergen and all over the place. Plants like spider plants are good at removing the gas and so is airing0 -
I can recommend the biobulbs too - absolutely brilliant. I want them throughout the house but I need different light fittings for some rooms so can't swap them all just yet.Putting these winter preps here so I don't forget!
Curtain pole installed in the living room
Paint curtain pole
Window quilts for landing window & french door
Add shrink film to the kitchen door & insulate
Insulate front door
Bubble wrap windows & french door
Wash front door curtain
Blind for the bathroom
Find wrist warmers & the wool socks!
Wash heated throws
Wash duvet & wool blankets
Buy vest tops to go under clothes and PJs
Buy nets for bathroom and kitchen
Buy or make blind for kitchen0 -
I love my biobulbs. Only problem is that because they are full-spectrum light I don't notice they're on, so frequently forget to switch them off when I leave the room, which isn't a problem with normal bulbs. They're also much nicer to wake up to, even though they are bright.0
