  • I've given in tonight, eldest DD popped in, very miserable, all sorts of problems with their house, her car, and their cat is missing. The kitchen was at 12.6C whcn I got home at 7pm so I put the bathroom and kitchen radiators on, and lit a fire.

Butterfly Brain I think you're getting a stove, aren't you? I'm very envious! The sweep condemned my cast iron fire as its canopy is too tall for the inglenook, and I really want to get a multifuel stove with a door, and a flat top which can take a pan. Best fun the past few weekends has been cutting up and stacking a heap of wood.. I'm getting a couple of bags of coal each week at £6.50 / 20kg and filled the oil tank when the Syria crisis was looming, paid over the odds in a panic that it would go sky high, but at least it's there and I'll use as little as possible now it's only me here.

The worst draught is from the catflap in the kitchen door, even with a curtain it's very noticeable and the door faces west so the flap blows open in the wind. Sealing it up would also stop them bringing mice in but I hate the thought of them being shut out overnight and it they've gone wandering up in the field they don't hear me calling them at bedtime.

Jobs for the weekend include trying to fix a cold radiator, researching stove suppliers, and putting my long-overdue new duvet on the bed before the forecast chilly spell.

I bought a lovely bed sheet from lidl earlier this week that is like fleece. I truely recomend people go but them - they are so lovely and cosy and you dont get that initial shock of a cold sheet. OH not so keen as he is always warm anyway but its lovely. So cold tonight. I cant add anymore layers to me and the kids so the heating has gone on.

The roof is now fixed so hopefully no more leaks. The dehumidifier is on in the bedroom and drying out the damp. We will get the plasterer in when we know all is ok with the roof.

Really hoping we have no more expense. The tumble drier is making a funny noise every now and again (showing its age) hope it's lasts the winter.

Two huge on line shops from mr T & mr A, All the basic for the next six weeks, including all Christmas food and pet supplies. Only need fresh stuff to top up each week. Worried the weather may turn, we live in the sticks can snowed in for days. Stored food everywhere, cupboards, under the bed, wardrobe.
We have a small portable paraffin heater, touches, candles and matches. Bring on winter.
