I live alone and my usage is about 12 KWhr/day averaged over a quarter which works out at about £1.70 a day. I'm terrible for leaving gadgets plugged in so I really ought to be able to reduce that.0

Our average daily consumption is 32kw per day!!!!!!!! Been told average is between 10-11!! So we have been using 3 times the amount!!!
We have used 11739 in the year! Average is 4000! Crikey!!!!!
Two teenagers are the main culprits ...... so after a lot of moaning and screaming this morning hopefully this is going to go down with immediate effect!!!
Have paid a lump sum to our energy supplier to get direct debits back down to a manageable amount monthly ......
Have you had a meter change recently or changed your energy company? Please check you energy bills and compare to your meter to make sure your not being billed imperial rather than metric. Imperial units are roughly 3 times the metric amount.
The other possibility is that someone has left the immersion heater switched on.0 -

Golly, my mouth dropped wide open at this. I was shocked.
Can be done though.
My advice would be to buy an "owl monitor". I bought mine in Tesco for about £25.The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0 -

No we've never had a meter change, but how would we check imperial to metric..... our bills are all on line and we are a fixed rate, energy company told me best fixed rate they offer (apparently!), fixed til april 2013, have been with same company for a few years now, got fed up of being offered the fab deals by other companies, to go with them and then bills increase !
Havent got an immersion so no possibility there im afraid
but have got a tumble dryer and maybe due to such bad weather this summer have probably used it more than i normally would
Wondering if two teenagers can be as bad as an immersion though, never turn there tvs or lights off !!! I feel like a permanent nag already .... they dont know whats coming now i've been collared for this bill:eek: !!!
So today have made drastic changes (taken bulb out off our DD's lamp today as she doesnt seem to know how to turn it off!!!), DS leaves tv on all night mostly on standby and his xbox is on standby all the time too .....
We also play a part in this huge useage too, never turn pc off, or virgin box and our bedroom tv is always on standby too, might as well leave it on all day ..... so big changes to start today!!!!
We noted the meter reading at midday today and we are going to read it at midday tomorrow to see how much we have used in a 24 hour period .... weekend admittedly, so will do the same mid week too ..... and thanks good advice, we are going to invest in an owl
Sorry, myright, seem to have hijacked your thread a bit, but any advice is most welcome .;)0 -
Hi picardygirl, I an sure you will be able to get that bill down with effort.
The owl will soon let you know how much electric you are using. After a wile you will know when things have been left on and how much it should be reading when you all go to bed or go out.The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0 -
Atm it's 17.2kWh per day.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0

Dunno about difference between weekdays and weekends, but we are 2 working adults, gas for heating / showering and hob, electric everything else, 5kWh a day averaged out between meter reads0

Been monitoring usage as we have just moved house
6 Units per day, 70p a day. normally about £20 a month.
However, last few weeks we have been using a very energy hungry wallpaper steamer.

Hi, whilst every little helps, your sort of consumption cannot be attributed to appliances left in standby.
There must be some high wattage items being used to cause this useage.
Electric cooker/immersion heater/hot tub/tumble dryer/electric shower/kettle/electric fire/security lighting/large fridge/freezers etc. etc .
You need to look at what has changed , how much has your electricity useage actually risen compared to previous bills or was your useage fairly high before.
We leave tv's and computers on , cook with electricity, washer on at least once a day, occasional immersion use, occasional electric fire use although have energy saving lights throughout and we use around 9/10 units/day which is around the average useage of 3500/year.
Concentrate on the high wattage items before tweaking useage of your low wattage appliances.
You might upset everyone by moaning about the trivial things and then find it doesn't make much difference to the overall situation.0 -
Keith is correct to point out, all things that heat up use the most electric.
Slow cookers are good and use a lot less electric.
Clothes on line.
Hot Water bottle and thermal t.shirt v CH heating. The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)0
