It's actually irrelevant;) We're only 4 weeks into the academic year so how could you or your daughter possibly know that she has a £40 to"save" every week? What she has is a surplus. Things like spending on clothers, shoes, hair cuts, travel passes, christmas presents, etc don't actually occur weekly - they occur in large chunks irregularly so it's only sensible to "save" something every week to "spend" later.

    That's called B-U-D-G-E-T-I-N-G......

Surely you save to buy "clothers (sic), shoes, hair cuts, travel passes, christmas presents", or whichever of these is relevant to a student?

Whatever she chooses to spend this extra money on it shows that some people's children have been brought up to manage their money properly and to live on an appropriate income.

After accomondation costs I was spending £225 a month, which sufficed for most stuff. I did take some extra money with me from part time jobs and summer work. So I would say around £250 a month.

I also ran a car on this. And put on some weight from all the food I ate :D

emm yes thats what she's done and thats how she knows much she can save each week. Which is exactly what I have said she is doing.

She knows how much she's got from her Maintenance loan and grant. She knows how much her halls cost for the year, she's taken the left over amount and devided it by 52 (as she realises the money has to last her all year not just while she's actually at uni) it works out at about £70 a week.

She's spending about £40 a week on food, toiletries and entertainment, and she even bought her self a new dress last week (from ebay) so the extra £30 a week she's putting in her savings account to save for her deposit for next year and yes the extras you have described.

It doesn't change the fact that she is managing very well on £70 a week which was the whole point of my first post in this thread.

Oh and every few weeks, as ruby rightly said, isn't every other week it's every 3-4 weeks.

I think my daughter must know I'm talking about her, she's just text to say she's not had to do a food shop this week and still has 5 meals in the freezer! She's less impressed to find that someone has been using her butter out of the fridge though.

someone obviously hasn't let my daughter know about that rule :rotfl: Though it's not surprising they get into some states, last weekend my daughter was in a pub that was selling jagerbombs for 59p  and the off-licence at the end of her street sells 4 bottles of wine for £10. They did go in to buy some but noticed that the alcohol content on two bottles of supposedly identical wine was different, one was 12% and the other was 13% and after being warned about fake wines and spirits they decided £10 for 4 bottles really was too good to be true and left it!

Some of us have kids who weren't born with silver spoons in their mouths Looby and they know how to manage their affairs - well done to your daughter.

Mine is making spinach and potatoe bake tonight - man can not live by shephed's pie alone!

And she is contemplating blowing the budget out of the water on joining the skiing trip this Christmas - I have told her to go for it and she can make economies else where to pay for it if needs be - funds have also been deposited in an ISA.
Here dead we lie because we did not choose
To live and shame the land from which we sprung.
Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
    And we were young.

My offspring appears to have hit it lucky with flatmates. Think there is 14 of them and they write up a week's tea menu, purchase the stuff and divide by the 14 of them, they also put in any individual requests for lunch purchases(pay that bit totally themselves) Last week it cost my youngster £12 and you should see the feasts they are having(get photos of the spreads !!) Think I am jealous :)

Is this the one Student Room are organising? Must say, I'm rather tempted myself :D
