What right does someone have...

...to comment on my eating?

I'm a bigger girl (5ft 1,size 14, broad shoulders) and over the past few days I've eked out a box of apple Pop-Tarts that I bought on cheap from Asda - at 200cal a pastry it's scary! I know I'm on the heavy side, and have been taking steps to improve myself.

I've constantly had comments like "do you know how fattening they are?" "you'll get fat eating those" "I thought you were supposed to be on a diet" and even "you won't get any slimmer if you keep eating stuff like that".

!!!!!!. If it was a skinny girl refusing lunch, these people would probably applaud, no? I eat them one at a time and savour them, but when my skinny colleague ate 4 in one go nobody said anything.

I feel like I have to explain that I am doing a crazy workout program, I do eat healthily most of the time, the Pop-Tarts are a treat, not a staple, and I've budgeted for them calorie-wise. The weight is coming off slowly but surely, the exercise is strengthening me, and overall I'm feeling better!

But why should I have to? It's like people see that they have a fat friend and no matter how intelligent that friend is they say "do you think I should say something about his/her weight problem?". Like they don't have mirrors and haven't noticed!?!

ARGH. Sorry for all that, I think I needed a rant...

  • Who are these people telling you that you cant eat as you please? Tell them to F off or something. You're body do as you please.

The same happened to me, i used to eat crisps everyday at work, everyone complained saying it will give me a heart attack. Blah Blah Blah. Yet, other people could eat crisps. I am not large. just tall and well built, muscular. In the end i gave up on crisps could not be bothered with people complaining all the time.

    So do as you please.
  • Thanks Sharp, I'm glad it's not just me who's encountered this.

It's comments like those that stopped me being able to eat socially for most of my twenties...

You need to develop a tougher skin my dear.

Why not reply with a pithy comment about one of their habits - eating, drinking so much coffee, not taking regular exercise etc - and see how they take it. Then say "Now you know how I feel when you make comments on my varied, calorie-counted diet. Not nice is it?"

Good luck with your steady weight loss and exercise routines - you will be healthier for it and everyone needs a treat every now & then ;)
  • I'm small and so is dd and we get comments all the time, you should eat more, its not healthy to be underweight etc, dd was even asked by our dentist if she had bulimia as she had acid errosion from drinking too much fruit juice. We are not that small, both size 8 and we eat healthy normal portions and food. I used to be polite and either explain we are naturally small or just ignore them but recently I've started replying with "I can change my weight, what will you do about your face?" or "F*** Off" or "What business is it of yours lard a***", ok you may not be popular but they will go away:p

People have the right to say what they want when they want about your or anyone else's eating, thats the reality of life, its how you deal with it that will make the difference for you, good luck:)

Based on these examples it sounds like they know you're on a diet. So they might think they're being helpful? DH used to do this until I pointed out that it did more harm than good. Former emotional eater here. :o

Honestly, this is why I haven't told anyone that I'm trying to lose weight. Seems to work, people haven't made any comments about my diet now being healthier than it was before. The only time I always get comments is when I go to a well known pizza chain and have one of their salads - although that's nothing to do with dieting, I'm lactose intolerant!

Keep at it, your results will shut them up soon enough. :p
  • Thanks LD :) trying-to-stop emotional eater here haha!

funnily enough, all my colleagues know is that I've embarked on the crazy workout plan as a training scheme for the Spartan Race. Maybe they assume I should diet too?

Keep up your good work and don't let them get to you (yes I know easier said than done)
I would suggest they are feeling threatened and envious that you are doing something positive about your life. It highlights to them how shallow their own lives are. And what do most people do when they feel threatened - they attack.

You'll have the last laugh cos you'll end up slimmer and fitter - they'll still be envious and mean-spirited.

If you want to eat them, fine
however don't hide behind "they are only 200cals"
they are 200 cals of empty calories
If you are serious on losing weight then theres far better treats to have

No £$%" haha, I do know this. What is a treat to some people (e.g. a banana, whoop) is NOT a treat to me.Eventually all of this is being phased out - until then I shall continue to choose my own treats so I don't end up bingeing. I'm not stupid!!

Just realised... You sound like one of the people in my OP... :rotfl:

EDIT: Also, where did I say only 200 calories! I said that amount for a treat is scary in fact - I don't hide behind anything!
