If he has the weekend off and payday is Friday, sites like Haven have a last minute section that you may be able to afford just for a few days. If there was one near enough to you I would ask him to drop you off and leave you without the car and pick you up again before he goes into work when your holiday ends.

He is entitled by law to 5.6 weeks holiday each year. So why isn't he taking it?

    he's self employed.

I think this puts a completely different slant on things. Most self employed people I know have trouble tearing themselves away.At the end of the day, they have to, they can't be sure when there next paycheck is coming.

Enjoy your time with DS, I know you said it's not pay day until Friday. But putting on some wellies and going to the park doesn 't cost anything. Neither does going to the musuem.

I personally thnk centre parks is good for older children, butlins being better for younger. I hated the thought of going to butlins for a weekend, but my children loved it so much they wanted to forfit there holiday on a plane to go back to butlins. Weve also had breaks in Pontins, Haven and Hoseasons sites and although pontins is a bit dated we loved it all the same

Enjoy your time with DS, i also work weekends and now my children are in school and nursery its becoming increasing difficult to get much time with them at all.

doesn't it just! being self employed is very different to having a day job, you're seldom off-duty because you know that it's all down to you...

OP, I wish you'd mentioned this in your first post, I wouldn't have read so much into it.

I'm not sure the OP's husband is self-employed, it was Judi who replied to another poster saying her husband was self-employed.
  • Nah, mine isnt self employed. He is a legal executive (well, he would be if he pulled his finger out and took the last part of his exam!)

Over the years DH and I have often taken separate holidays, for no reason other than it fitted in. DH used to take our caravan to a site and leave DD1 and I there for a week, he would then return and pick us up. This year he took DS3&4 away with the 'van and DD2 and I travelled by train and joined them. Worked well for us!

If you like your job, or feel a responsibility for how you do it, a lot of people in professional/managerial jobs don't. Its not just a case of the boss frowning on it, but sometimes a commitment to the role you do.

When I was working as a solicitor, I rarely took my full entitlement and nor did most of my colleagues. My DH who I talked about earlier is in a similar type of job. Friends who are barristers, doctors and in upper management also may or may not take their full entitlement every year.

5.6 weeks holiday per year is a right, not an obligation as far as employee's are concerned, just like the working time directive.
