If you go through the reasoning, Apple wanted audio/video out on the port, microUSB doesn't do that. To retain full functionality of the old fitting they had to design a new fitting.

You can buy an adapter to use microUSB cables if you want to use them for charging and data transfer.

You can do alot with a micro USB

It's a European Standard, so impossible for any company to patent.

I expected a reply like that. I was just being sarcastic.

The new charger is really nice, although it is annoying that now I only have one charger (have multiple cables around the house so can charge in almost any room). I don't have any other accessories to use with it though so I guess I'm lucky.
OP I can't believe you missed out all the moaning last week and didn't know about it though before you went to buy it!

This article (warning, Daily Mail!) implies that there won't be any third party cables available for lightning due to a chip in the cable.

I'm not too fussed. I just love my new toy :-)

I bought a 3rd party ipod Touch 4g AV lead and my ipod touch didn't recognise it.

(the shop said I could return it if it didn't work so I exchanged it for something else)

Luckily Sainsbury had a big Apple accessory clear out and I got an Apple AV lead for £12 a few months back. (and it works a treat!

(so I don't know if it was a sneaky chip or pin configuration or something else?)

The SIM is an international standard (ETSI) and Apple could not develop their own as is would not be compliant. That said, they will probably do away with any SIM for the next one.

Nokia had their own plans for a Nano SIM and this and Apples version were voted on. Apple won, and is the latest (and possibly last). Standard we'll see.
