It would appear everyone will be offered a smart meter by 2020.

I've just had mine installed, and so far, i'm very impressed.

I'm currently using my slow cooker at the rate of 4.43p per hour.

Every Mse'er should have one? :)

Only British Gas and Eon currently offer this technology.

    Hi

Is it possible that the above should read 4.43p per hour, not kWh ? ... ;)

Scottish Hydro Electric also offer smart meters in some areas.

Just remember that a smart meter as such does not save you money but it does make you more aware of what you are using and it is that information that the MSE'rs will put to good use.

Yep, you're right. Kwh is a unit of energy. :rotfl:

These were going to be made compulsory by law but because they are little more than information gatherers for the power companies and raise a whole lot of privacy invasion issues, they have been made optional after protests by MPs amongst others.
The power companies will use your usage to their own advantages and probably start charging extra when your usage is at it`s peak.

So no I don`t think every MSE should have one.
    I certainly will not.

    .

Do you mean just your slow cooker is costing 4.43p an hour? or all the electricity being consumed in your house(at that moment in time) is costing 4.43 an hour?

    Hi

One thing I did notice when reading the eon information referenced was that there is absolutely no mention of functionality relating to energy export .... another issue is that the remote display seems to simply make standard assumptions on the ratio of standard to E7 electricity usage instead of querying both separately .... taking this into account and considering the near £12bn that the project is budgeted to cost us all, eon in particular need to stop, reevaluate what the customer needs actually are and then release kit which is fit-for-purpose ... as it is the offering is about as much use as a chocolate teapot, the only advantage being the ability to read consumption on a remote basis ... £12bn to save a couple of meter reading visits a year ?? ... someones having a laugh !! .... :rotfl:

And will everything they have fit be compliant to DCC standards and the latest SMETS? Since regulation states they don't have to be, they could have just been a selling perk for some.

Can I ask if you're in a built up area?

I moved to First Utility because of their attractive prices on a smart meter. However, their installer didn't show up on the day I stayed at home for him, and over the following year First Utility simply didn't want to know when I phoned (most months!) to complain.

I suspect we're just not in a busy enough area for them to regularly be out fitting near here.

Left them in the end after getting fed up of their variable only direct debit, set to whatever-the-hell-they-fancied KWH each month (1 month was billed for £240. Actual usage, £35...)

There was a thread not long ago where a poster had been told that despite switching to include a new smart meter, FU had announced it would no longer be fitting them.

Honestly, the industry standards are being released soon which is likely to render some as no longer smart. So, they would be no use if you switch just like now.

I am not too concerned about the privacy invasion issue of my gas and electric usage. I'm only a low usage user in the first place, and it is helpful to me, to give some indication of every penny spent on gas and electric, literally.

Do you think the energy company is going to monitor every household individually and start charging them extra when their usage is at its peak? I would have thought that was already obvious.

Yes. The slow cooker was the only electrical appliance switched on, ( apart from the smart meter, that is.)

I guess it's like anything, and it's a waiting game to see if it stands the test of time?
