Apparently she had a good day today with no tears after the initial ones when I dropped her off. She even ate ALL her lunch.
But they did stay in and watch a dvd at playtime so I wonder if that's where the issue is.

If this bit of a rest made the difference, talk it through with her teacher. Your daughter won't want to miss out on all her playtimes but there may be times during the day when she can have a quiet moment or two.
  • I'm glad she has had a better day today :j
Usually it does take children a while to settle in to their first year of school, the days are long and there are lots of new faces, routines and expectations to get their heads around.
If the teacher continues to say your child isn't engaging in activities, they need to adapt their activities to suit your child's interests, this is what the early years curriculum is all about. Tell the teacher some if your child's likes and interests so she can create a stimulus for her learning.
It sounds to me like today may be the start of many happy days at school though :) but don't be disheartened if at the end of week/term she is feeling this way again, it's very tiring for them....and how many of us want to get out of our warm beds on a cold, wet morning to go to work?! But once we are there we are fine. :)
    Good luck.
  • When my DD started in Reception last year, I found that she needed a nap on a Sunday afternoon which improved her energy levels for the week. Even now she has a quiet hour on a Sunday afternoon.

Re the lunches not being eaten, I had that too, I found using biscuit cutters to cut the sandwich into shapes encouraged her to eat. A dippy lunch is still popular, cream cheese, breadsticks and raw veggies.

Keep perserving, you're on the right track if she's had a good day today.

She cried again today but perked up later and has made another friend who looked after her on the slide!

I have to say the teachers really tried to cheer her up which is very reassuring. They even gave her a hug which is nice.

I'll have to persevere but I just wanted to come back and say thanks to everyone who replied. It's been a great help and has really lifted me because now I don't feel so alone!

    I've been Money Tipped!
Would a sticker chart work for every days she doesn't cry and is brave?

Currently doing one with my 5 1/2 DS to match good behaviour at school

Yeah. Children do that a lot. Same way they will happily tuck into something you have always known they detest, or decide they hate something they have always adored. And they always show you to be a liar in public, never in the security and anonymity of your own home. This will continue over the rest of their school life :)

Oh, and you will probably get a fairly constant stream of 'Mrs Teacher says........' comments over the next six months. Within a couple of weeks, you'll most likely be muttering under your breath slightly ungrateful comments about Mrs Teacher.

It's a lovely time, if tinged a little bit with sadness from the knowledge your baby isn't quite such a baby anymore.
