I'm convinced by the health benefits of using lard. Apparently it's as healthy as olive oil and has about the same amount of monosaturated fat. Just has a bad press. When I looked for more a few days ago (~6 may 2017) I was surprised to find that it had disappeared from local Aldi and Sainsburys but eventually found some in ASDA. Googling "lard shortage" gave some hits for times when there was a shortage in supply and lard disappeared from supermarket shelves. Is that happening again?

Gee. thanks for bumping a 5 year old thread.

Wow, five year old thread, a lot of supermarkets don't stock lard, but go to your local butcher, he is sure to have some.

It's showing on Tesco online grocery website.
My reply ^^^^ earlier today was to the poster who 'bumped the 5 year old thread' with what appears to be a valid comment about lard not being available now in certain shops.

I never notice dates. I read a thread from the beginning and work my way through it.
I didn't notice the age of the thread until I got to the end. :)

As a vegetarian I don't buy lard; I use Stork for pastry and stir fry veg in olive oil. I love leeks fried in butter with black pepper.

I was interested to see this thread bumped up, as in the last few weeks i have been looking for lard and not found any. I use it half and half with butter to make short pastry. Also for roast potatoes.

I'm just on my way out for an emergency top up shop so will check.

Eggs CAN be dry-fried, or cooked in a little fry-light...but they are at their scrummiest when fried in the fat from the bacon...mmmmm....fry bacon in a pan...take out and keep warm...now add the egg to the pan....fry just one side, flip and spoon a little fat over the yolk so it just sets and will still be runny when you bite into it!....remove the egg...now take two slices of white bread...spoon the remains of the bacon fat onto the bread in lieu of butter...add the bacon and egg to one slice...a good splodge of brown sauce...and top with the remaining slice of greased bread.....enjoy with a big mug of tea.... drooooool

I am rather fond of dripping toast too!

I use butter for pastry and for most frying tasks, too.
And I always have to remember to check that any pastry I wish to consume is suitable for vegetarians if eating out - which has got me some funny looks over the years.

Tesco value lard 39p for 250 gm contains pork lard and 'natural antioxidant', - not sure what that last is. Think I may stick to using butter, at least I know what that is.

You fry bacon & eggs in lard????? Surely you're aware of how bad that is for you?

Bacon cooks in it's own fat and eggs can be cooked without any fat at all in a non stick frying pan.

Care to offer any proof that cooking bacon & eggs in lard is unhealthy?

I note that a few years ago the US cracked down on the use of PFC's in the manufacture of non-stick pans after if was shown to potentially lead to an increase in tumours of the liver, pancreas and testicles and reduced fertility.

Give me lard over your non-stick pan any day of the week.

You've quoted a post from almost 5 years ago!

    Really?
I'm sure that poster's non stick pan may have been in landfill for a while.

    Once more - it's a 5 year old post!
