In Lidl the other day I asked one of the shop assistants where the Lard was... he said they don't sell it any more. When I asked why he said it's to do with having to sell less things with hydrogenated fat in. There's none in lard (is there? I thought it was just animal fat?) , I said, not like those awful spreads you're selling that are full of chemicals!

I was bemoaning this to my best mate later that day and it turns out Aldi (at least round here) have stopped selling it too, she noticed the week before. I still managed to find it in Tesco and Co-op but I am rather worried they may all stop selling it too.

I use it for frying bacon and eggs and for roast potatoes, my best mate uses it for pastry... we're both in our 20s so it's not like it's old fashioned. Yet you rarely see recipes calling for lard any more.

Has anyone else noticed lard dissapearing? I am going to email Lidl and request they start stocking it again...

  • Cheap hydrogenated lard may be being discontinued, but have you tried asking around at rural shops / farmers markets / old fashioned butchers for the real thing?

I've a freezer full but I did render it down myself from someone's pig...
  • have you tried Asda? it is in the home baking isle

You fry bacon & eggs in lard????? Surely you're aware of how bad that is for you?

Bacon cooks in it's own fat and eggs can be cooked without any fat at all in a non stick frying pan.

  • Sainsburys still sell it although it's a lot more expensive than I remember it being last time (maybe because it is no longer the hydrogenated stuff?)

Many friends said how unhealthy/gross it was to fry eggs in a small amount of lard - after tasting them none could disagree that they are way more delicious.

  • You'll still find it, even if the supermarkets do withdraw it from sale - just go to a Polish shop instead.

I dont use lard personally but recently read somewhere that it isn't as bad for you as you would think because it's natural, like lots of things use sparingly but it is a natural product.
