  • I dared to ask in M&S once where their lard was. The shop assistant looked down their nose at me and said "Madam, we do NOT sell lard!" :rotfl:

I've recently moved to using whole milk instead of semi-skimmed as I heard the extra nutrients it gives you far outweighs the benefits of reducing the fat!

Also, my Uncle's doctor told him he was much better off using butter rather than processed spreads so I'm doing the same too.

One thing's for sure, they definitely taste better! :j
I'm so sorry if you were enjoying this thread and mine is the last post!!

  • MY mum always used lard or dripping for y.puds and potatoes, plus it makes pastry really light, I fell into the trap of buying these processed oils and now only buy olive oil, lard and butter, much better for taste and less chemicals in the body.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

No, they sell goose fat instead.

That's posh you see, as it can be sold in a dinky glass jar for thirty times the price of a block of lard.

To some extent though I have gone back to semi skimmed milk when Mum was ill to put weight on and get nourishment into her we were told to add items high in calories so yes all of the above whole milk, cream, butter etc...that advice came from the hospital dietician and is in a book that they issue with information about building up someone and recipes.

And if in moderation and I can afford to I now continue to buy some of the things I am told that I shouldn't such as butter:p

And in recent days I have even started treating myself to items like scones, teacakes and crumpets with plenty of butter, cheese and/or jam...

Having read a lot of the replies since my post, i've done some research and I stand corrected!

The problem is when they change their minds about these things they don't publicise it. I consider myself a bit more educated today ;)

I should have said in my OP that in moderation most things are fine, but I still don't think i'd fry bacon in it, I don't see the need.
After 4 years of heartache, 3 rounds of IVF and 1 loss :A - we are finally expecting our miracle Ki11en - May 2014 :j

And a VERY surprise miracle in March 2017!

    Isn't lard pork fat?

Like the stuff that renders out of things like, oh, I don't know - bacon?

And you would need to add more fat to something that already gives out fat because......?

It doesn't release enough fat to fry an egg in, I suppose.

    (I grill bacon, anyhow)

You can eat that (minus the sarnie) if you do a low carb diet! I know that they have been blasted but so many people have lost good amounts of weight and maintained the loss (me included, and I am almost a vegetarian!)! On these diets you can eat bacon and egg fried in lard! Not suggesting that you should do this diet mind you, just pointing out that there are different ways to reach the same goal!

Edited to add: just saw your signature and had to come back to congratulate you on your excellent weight loss, you have done much better than I have done or might ever do, so you obviously know what you are doing! Well done!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
