I may ask the butchers if he can get me pork fat, making my own would be brilliant!
I stopped using sunflower oil and marg/spreads a while ago but it doesn't leave me with many cheap options!
I was very happy when butter went down down in price as we get through about 5 packs a week.

You fry bacon & eggs in lard?????:eek: Surely you're aware of how bad that is for you?
Bacon cooks in it's own fat and eggs can be cooked without any fat at all in a non stick frying pan.
Probably nowhere as bad as using non stick pans which leave petrochemical residues on your food!
Incidentally, for lard users: chips fried in lard are absolutely delicious! I no longer eat lard or bacon as am practically vegetarian now, but the flavour of lard and bacon is still imprinted in my taste buds as seriously YUMMY!Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -

Many friends said how unhealthy/gross it was to fry eggs in a small amount of lard - after tasting them none could disagree that they are way more delicious.

Good for you.
I'd probably give the lard a wide berth myself for health reasons but all the manufactured spreads designed by the food nazis to make us feel like we're doing the right thing are just as bad, especially if they use palm oil, which in its unsustainable form of production is bad news for the orang utans too, whose natural habitat is being wiped out by greedy and unscrupulous growers.
And there is nothing as tasty as chips cooked in lard, but have you given peanut (groundnut) oil a try? Mmmm....:)
Just thought, don't use peanut oil if you're unsure if you or a guest has a peanut allergy, but it does taste nice.0 -
I wonder if all those who will not eat lard, use the plastic based spreads?I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0

Another fat that has been demonised for being saturated is coconut oil, which now is being hailed as very good for health. I use it in moderation, and groundnut oil too, but mainly use olive oil, and rapeseed to fry, sometimes.
I feel that trying to stay away from Frankenstein fats such as margarines and spreads goes a long way towards maintaining a healthy diet. So many food scares, who to believe? Just using a modicum of common sense and moderation is the way forward!Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -
Have you tried using beef dripping, there are no better roast spuds thank those cooked in beef dripping.
Peel and tinse then dry them off, sprinkle a bit of salt on then shave some beef dripping with a sharp knife on top of them. Cook on high (I dunno!) till they're done and enjoy! Yum yum the best!

As above, I find it very hard to believe that in moderation animal fats such as lard and dripping are worse for you than the artificial/heavily processed fats available, same applies for coconut oil and any other natural product.0 -
Well my bacon and egg sarni I have just eaten tastes all the better for a bit of lard in the pan...mmm:TKnow the difference between what you WANT and what you NEED. :T0

I can still get lard in Tesco, I use it for pastry and I put a little bit in my yorkshire pudding tin.
I agree that lard, like everything else, is not bad for you in moderation, just as butter isn't bad for you in moderation. I get a bit annoyed when perfectly good natural food is demonised and then we're told to eat all these man-made reduced fat spreads.
Apart from the fact butter and lard are natural it's about taste too, there's no doubt that things taste better cooked with butter or lard than they do with manufactured spreads. Cream is full of fat and bad for you if you drink it by the pint but it tastes so nice and does no harm if eaten in moderation.Dum Spiro Spero0
