Can somebody please check this for me. I am supposed to get up to 8 mb. This is what I get 968kbps download, 383 kbps upload. This seems quite slow to me. Am I correct? Thanks

I used the same speed checker and I'm also getting the same type of results yet, today my connection has gone up to 8 meg with AOL. My Netgear router is saying Download - 8128 kbps and Upload - 448 kbps. Which is right? When I download a song though it takes about 10 seconds where it use to take about a minute on my old 2 meg service.

up to 8Mb means anything from a standard 512Kb connection, up to around 7.1Mb (no one can get 8Mb)

As you are admitting to stealing someone else's broadband connection, don't be too surprised if you don't get much help on here!

Yes, the first court case in this country was couple of years ago now, when a British jury found someone guilty of using a neighbourhood wireless broadband connection without permission, brought under the Communications Act 2003. This resulted in a £500 fine, 12 month conditional discharge and confiscation of his computer equipment.

In the states last year, someone was sentenced to nine years in jail, for intercepting credit card details on a wireless network. People who steal bandwidth know that they are stealing and often do it to commit other illegal acts over the net. Theft is theft even if it is digital theft!

I'm on 8MB Virgin.net and the most it has ever got up to in the two months since we've had it is about 3MB. We are on a freebie for 12 months so can't complain otherwise I'd downgrade to 2MB.

We are 277 meters from the local exchange.

Most ISP's say for DSL Max up to 8Mb so they can't guarantee that your speed will approach that. I get nowhere near that but I'm on a long line. There are a few website like Kitz,DSL Zone etc that will advise what to check and any alterations to make to try and increase your speed.
And some ISP's throttle your speed at peak times.
