A£di and Te3co shop today brought the total so far to £54-78 spent, seems a lot for just 4 days in but am hoping that apart from fruit & veg at the weekend and maybe some bread wont need to spend too much. Noticed that baking potatoes that cost £0.99 last week cost £1-69 this week for same weight so quite a big hike in price. :(

Will be on the look out for the rice and pasta in Morrisons thanks to Becksfaz when I go on Saturday but that will be out of second purse.

pearla thanks for that, there was a programme on about supermarket value brands and they found in a lot of cases that they were healthier, as they contained less sugar, salt etc. the mince is fattier, but i brown it off, and then put it through a collander with boiling water, then back to the pan for flavouring.
Ooh, that's good to know, thank you! I've started looking at the ingredients lists a little more carefully and was starting to notice that, good to have that confirmed! PS. thanks for the mince tip :)

Talking of value ranges - Sainsbobs basics do a tinned golden syrup pudding, and also a chocolate one which is just a rebadged Cadbury's.. both really nice & handy store cupboard standbys. I know there's more but my mind's gone blank!

As part od cutting costs, i am trying not to buy chicken breast all the time. I see that as from tomorrow, Lidl are doing Chicken thighs (£2.25 for 1kg), so thought i'd do something with them.

Anyone have any ideas for any recipes please?
Oh, thanks everyone for the reminder on how lovely chicken thighs are! I haven't had them in ages! I used to use them a lot in stews & curries, they really seem to work in those. I've made this curry recipe with chicken thighs loads of times, and they were divine. And it definitely works better with thighs.

Oh yeah, a spend. Bread, milk, bananas, more on-offer hula hoops and other bits (sweets & fizzy drinks, OH's fault!) - came to around £10. Must try and get him back on the cordials... there are loads kicking about here as well.

Massive dent to the budget today but I did take advantage of the £10 off £60 spend voucher at Mr M in today's Sun. Spent £52,96 in all.

So stocked up on a load of cupboard stuff, tonnes of fruit and veg (because I'm trying to start sticking to Slimming World again!) and some yellow stickers to go in the freezer.

Hoping that the rest of the month we can get buy on stuff in the freezer with some top up shows from Aldi. Saying that, Tesco have sent my a voucher for £6 off if I spend £40 but don't think I'm that tempted. I stopped shopping with them for a reason afterall.

Sorry to sound silly but the newbie would like to know - what's this '2nd purse' thing about?!
  • Hey I am new to this too, and was wondering, what the second purse was also,
also is the budget to include the likes of loo rolls and washing powder.
I dont have a clue about how much I spend at all per month so I think I am in for a shock, there is 5 of us in the house Me hubby and 3 daughters aged 25 19 and 16 plus some times two of there B/Fs.
With loseing tax credits this year £500, and the dla playing funny !!!!!!s and stopping my dla while they review my case(been on dla for ten years and will never get better, but they are dragging there heels and been investagating me now since Jan ) we are down so far £2000 this year.
So as you can see I need to get a tight grip of the purse strings,
I have just loved reading your posts keep up the saving

Becks/Smashed the second purse is explained here.

I like the sound of it, and lots of people use it, but its too much faffing for me, maybe i just don't fully get it. I do my own version, whereby, if i stock up on stuff that is on special offer, eg toilet rolls, but am not going to use them for a month or two, i do not add them to the budget, but put a price label on them and store them away. When i came to use them, i then add them into that months budget, so i still end up buying what i want, but not going over budget. I only do this for really good offers. If i wanted to put money aside, i could buy them back at the normal rate, and then put the difference away. Coxy11 who is managing the grocery challenge uses 2nd purse to great success.

I am sure that I have seen somewhere details on how to do links but up to yet cannot seem to find it. If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be grateful - thanks.
